Men's Tennis Downs Elmira, 6-3

ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick earned its fourth win in the Empire 8 this season with a 6-3 victory over Elmira College on Sunday in Oneonta. The Hawks, who are now 4-3 in conference play and in fourth place in the E8 standings, could clinch a berth in the four-team conference playoffs this coming week. A Stevens win over Utica today would mean Hartwick could clinch the fourth seed with a win over the Pioneers on Wednesday.

In today's win over the Soaring Eagles, the Hawks took four singles matches after winning two of three doubles flights. Junior Matt Whitty (St. Catherines, ON), sophomore Sean Barr (Scarsdale, NY), and freshmen Peter Dumas (Albany, NY) and Mike del Rosario (Troy, NY) each were winners on the day.

Barr and Dumas earned 6-0, 6-0 romps in the fourth and fifth singles matches. Barr jumped to 7-6 on the season with the win while Dumas won his sixth match of the year. Whitty and del Rosario each earned their fourth victories in 2009 in straight sets. Whitty won 6-3, 6-0 over Elmira's Ryan Patterson, and del Rosario blanked Soaring Eagle Ed Brennan in the first set, 6-0, and closed out the match 6-3 in the second set.

In doubles action, Whitty and Dumas crushed Michael Leslie and Brennan, 8-1, for the Hartwick tandem's third doubles win. Barr and del Rosario won their fifth match in third doubles, 8-2, over Patterson and Matt Montgomery.

Hartwick (6-7) next travels to Union on Tuesday as the team looks to get back to the .500 mark. The Hawks then host Utica at 4 p.m. on Wednesday with a chance to lock up a spot in the E8's in early May.
