Hawks Edge Rensselaer For Third Straight Dual Match Win

TROY, NY - Hartwick won four of six singles matches to earn a 5-4 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Tuesday at Sharp Courts in Troy, NY. The Hawks now have won three straight dual matches and improve to 8-7 overall.

'Wick, trailing 2-1 after doubles, picked up singles wins from Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA), Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico), Sean Barr (Scarsdale, NY), and Peter Dumas (Albany, NY) to claim the victory.

Boyd rolled past RPI's Ed Cullen, 6-2, 6-1 for his seventh win in first singles. It was also the freshman's second straight victory. Navarro reached double digits for wins this season with his 10th victory in second singles, 6-3, 6-3 over Michael Wilkins. Barr won his third straight match to improve to 9-6 in the fourth spot with a 7-5, 7-5 triumph over the Rohit Kumar. Dumas, after dropping the second set in a tie-breaker to Engineer Adam Generale in the fifth flight, came back for a 6-3 third set win for his eighth career victory.

In doubles action, Boyd and Navarro claimed their eight doubles win, 8-4, past Ed Cullen and Matt Asher. Dumas and Matt Whitty (St. Catherines, ON) came close to their fourth win in second doubles falling to Kumas and Wilkins by a nine games to seven margin.

The Hawks will look to extend their winning streak tomorrow against Union. The Hawks and Dutchmen tangle at 4 pm. in Schenectady.
