Dettenreider Memorial Fund and Hartwick Tennis Team Up for Free Adaptive Tennis Clinic

  October 23, 2008

ONEONTA, NY - The Eric D. Dettenreider (EDD) Memorial Fund will conduct a free tennis clinic for children and young adults with disabilities on Saturday, October 25 from 10 a.m. to noon at Hartwick College in Oneonta. Instructors will be teaching basic tennis skills in a non-competitive environment through games and activities. No prior experience in the game of tennis is necessary to participate. A pizza party and an awards ceremony will be held at the conclusion of the event.

For the second consecutive year, Hartwick men's and women's tennis coach Andrea Pontius will lead the clinic with the support of members of the 2008-09 'Wick men's and women's tennis teams as well as volunteers from the EDD Memorial Fund. Pontius and the Hawks' tennis teams have also held several tennis clinics this fall at Greater Plains Elementary in Oneonta for a large class of special needs children leading up to this Saturday's event.

The EDD Memorial Fund is a not-for-profit organization that provides recreational and competitive sports programs for young people with disabilities and strives to level the playing field for disabled youth. The organization was established in memory of Eric Dettenreider, an avid skier from Oneonta. Since 1997, the EDD Memorial Fund has provided sports programs to countless individuals with disabilities. In 2008 alone, more than 700 children throughout Central New York State will be reached through adaptive basketball, downhill skiing, soccer, swimming, and tennis programs.

In addition, the Dettenreider Memorial Fund will host its Annual Dinner and Silent Auction on the evening of October 25 at the Foothills Performing Arts Center in Oneonta. For more information on the dinner and auction, or to register for the Adaptive Tennis Clinic, please visit www.eddfund.org.
