
ROCHESTER, NY - Host Rochester Institute of Technology defeated Hartwick men's tennis 7-2 on Sunday in Empire 8 Conference play. The loss drops the Hawks to 7-6 overall and 3-4 in the E8 standings. The Tigers improve to 5-7 and 4-3.
Sophomores Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket Reg.) and Peter Dumas (Albany, NY/Colonie) each recorded singles victories for the Hawks. Boyd earned a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win over RIT's John Traver in first singles. With the victory, Boyd has now won four straight matches, improves to 9-4 on the season, and 5-2 in conference matches. Dumas scored a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win in third singles over Will Abisalih. Dumas has also won four straight matches and is 8-5 overall.
Sean Barr (Scarsdale, NY/Edgemont) was edged out in three sets in the fourth singles flight to Clayton Tontarski. Barr won the first set 6-3 with Tontarski taking sets two and three, 6-1, 6-0. Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico/American Military) and Matt Whitty (St. Catherines, Ontario/Ridley College) were narrowly beaten in second doubles, 9-8 (7-3) to Abisalih and Traver.
Hartwick travels up the road to Oneonta State on Thursday for its final non-conference dual match of the year. The Hawks then wrap up the regular season versus Elmira on May 2.
