CANTON, NY - Hartwick's shooting woes remained on Saturday as the team slipped to 5-6 overall after a 59-25 loss to St. Lawrence at Burkman Gym in Canton, NY. The Hawks scored just nine second-half points and shot less than 18% from the field in the setback.
The game marked the third consecutive time that 'Wick has shot less than 30% as a team, and it was the second time in the last three games the Hawks have shot below 20%.
Despite the loss, the Hawks are still just a game below .500. The team will face a stern test next weekend though as it hosts Ithaca (4-0 in E8) on Friday night and travels to Utica (3-1) Saturday.
St. Lawrence, which shot only 35.6% from the floor in the contest, was led by Brittany Parham's 11 points. Katie Palmer was the only other player in double digits with 10. Lauren Sischo, Jenna Krzemien, and Katherine Edgerton each scored eight points.
Hartwick's high scorer was Fritzi Flores (Bergenfield, NJ) with seven points. Danée Harrison (Cary, NC) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
The game's outlook was promising for the Hawks as they trailed their hosts by just six points at the break, 22-16. The Saints jumped out to its biggest lead of the first half, 16-9, with just over five minutes to play before the intermission, but a free throw by Krystle Crouse (Canjoharie, NY), and layups by Flores and Harrison would cut the Saint lead to two with two and a half minutes left. Edgerton and Flores would trade buckets before a Parham three-pointer would close the scoring in the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, the Hawks would come up empty on their first seven trips on the offensive end. By the time Kara Foro (Schenectady, NY) hit a jumper with 15:05 left in the game to break the scoreless streak, the Saints had taken an 18-point lead (36-18) thanks to making five of their first eight shots. The Saints would cruise the rest of the half as they never led by less than 20 points over the last 14 minutes as the Hawks connected on just three field goals.
Hartwick will host the Bombers Friday night at Binder beginning at 6 p.m. as the team looks to get back on track and even up its Empire 8 record. The Hawks take on the Pioneers on Saturday evening also at 6 p.m.
