ONEONTA, NY - St. John Fisher (11-6, 4-4 E8) used a 16-5 run to end the first half and a 17-7 spurt in the first seven minutes of the second half to gain a 20-point lead en route to a 68-53 win over Hartwick women's basketball on Friday night at Binder Gymnasium. The Hawks are now 8-10 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
Fisher's Mary Kate Comfort (Orchard Park, NY) gathered 18 points on the night to lead all scorers. She hit 9 of 16 from the floor and tied a team-high with six rebounds. Colleen Maloney (Liverpool, NY) added eight points, four steals, and four assists, and Stephanie Sweeney (Albany, NY) and Meagan Tubbs (Ticonderoga, NY) each scored seven points.
The Hawks were paced by Lauren Ploof (Hammond, NY) and Cassie Dresser (Ovid, NY) who each netted 11 points. Katie Caddell (Amsterdam, NY) contributed 10 points, and Danée Harrison (Cary, NC) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Hawks started the game trailing the Cardinals for the first 10 minutes of the opening period before forging ahead 19-18 with under eight minutes to play before the break. A 9-3 three-minute run capped by a Krystle Crouse (Canajoharie, NY) jumper would give HC the one-point edge. The lead was short-lived, however, as a layup by Meghan Soja (Whitesboro, NY) at the other end of the floor ignited the big run for the Cardinals to close the session up 10 points, 34-24.
To start the second half, the Hawks went 3 for 11 in the first seven minutes and turned the ball over five times while the Cardinals made seven shots including two three-pointers in the span to take command of the contest. The Hawks trailed by as many as 21 points with five minutes to go but would go on a 10-4 run to end the game, cutting the lead to single digits.
St. John Fisher shot 51% from the floor and dished out 18 assists in the game. The Hawks made 35% of their shots and went just 1 for 12 from three-point range. The victory for the Cardinals avenges an 80-70 Hartwick victory in Rochester on January 2nd.
Hartwick is back at Binder on Sunday at noon for a game with Nazareth. The Golden Flyers downed the Hawks on Jan. 3rd following their big win at Fisher by a final score of 63-39.
