'Wick Women's Lax Team Falls at Ithaca

ITHACA, NY - First-year player Hannah Kennedy (Avon, CT) tied a game-high scoring four goals for the second consecutive game but it wasn't enough as Ithaca downed Hartwick's women's lacrosse team on Saturday, 19-8. The Bombers, who improved to 7-8 and 3-4 in the Empire 8, led 5-0 after just four and half minutes played in the first half and scored the game's first 14 goals in the victory. 'Wick slips to 2-12 overall and is still looking for its first conference win.

Kennedy would score four times-once in the first half and three in the second-to lead the Hawks. Junior captain Katie Thorpe (South Windsor, CT), sophomore Grace Coppola (Scotia, NY), and freshmen Brittany LaVaute (Skaneateles, NY) and Emily Walsh (Cortland, NY) each scored once for the Hawks.

Eleven Bombers recorded at least a goal. Catherine Hurle netted four to lead IC. Five players scored two goals including Becky Bedard, who also added a match-high six assists.

Ithaca opened up a 12-0 lead after only 13 minutes played in the first half. The Bombers would tack another two scores before Kennedy scored to break the rally 7:06 before halftime. Walsh would net her 20th of the year 3:16 later to make it 14-2 at the halftime whistle.

Hartwick scored four of six goals in the opening 15 minutes of the second half. After IC tallied number 15 on the day, the Hawks would tally three times in 2:33. Kennedy found Coppola with 23:36 left before she scored her second of the day 1:02 later. LaVaute scored Hartwick third of the rally which was her 18th goal of the year.

After Ithaca answered with a goal, Thorpe beat Bomber goalie Heidi Puccio for her third score of 2009. IC would get three different goal scorers into the act later in the period before Kennedy scored twice with under a minute to play for her 3rd and 4th of the afternoon.

Hartwick keeper Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY) finished the day with eight saves and three ground balls. Senior defender Addie Partrick (Central Square, NY) also recorded three pickups. Tiffanie Bishop (Shoreham, VT) tied a game-high winning four draws. Thorpe, LaVaute and Jess Kenna (Mastic Beach, NY) earned three draws apiece.

The Hawks wrap up the regular season tomorrow at Elmira College. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Campus Field.
