ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick rolled to a 7-0 win over Alfred on Saturday at Elmore Field, thoroughly dominating the Saxons from the opening kickoff to the final whistle. The Hawks finished the match with a 21-0 advantage in shots and eight 'Wick players recorded at least a point. The Hawks improve to 5-9-3 overall and 2-4-1 in the Empire 8. Alfred drops to 4-10-2 and 0-7.
Both teams had to battle a driving wind and the pouring rain for the entire 90 minutes, but clearly the Hawks were able to adapt to the conditions as they scored just 40 seconds into the game and scored three times in the first 20 minutes. Brittany Pine (Hoosick Falls, NY) set up the opening goal as her shot was turned aside by Saxon keeper Amy Buisman, but the rebound went right to Kate Wigg (Underhill, VT) who scored her first of the season from in close. Just under 13 minutes later, Marisa Streun's (Amsterdam, NY) cross found senior Alesha Wright (Troy, NY) for her first of two goals on the day, and Pine would finish off a goal from both Streun and Wright 10 minutes later for a 3-0 Hawk lead at the break.
Briana Crow (Scotia, NY) got into the scoring act 3:37 into the second half as she ripped a shot past Buisman from 15 yards out. Lauren Ploof (Hammond, NY) would earn the assist on the play. Twenty-three seconds later, Ploof would get on the scoreboard with a low shot to the far post to make it 5-0 Hartwick.
In the 70th minute, Pine would net her second as she scored from in close with a blast to the upper part of the goal off a nice feed from sophomore Stacy McLam (Williamstown, VT). Wright closed out the scoring in the 78th minute from Alex Luke (Eagle Bridge, NY).
Ashley Taylor (Nashua, NH) had a quiet day in the 'Wick goal. She would not be called upon to make a save in the match but still recorded her second shutout of the season.
The Hawks will wrap up the regular season next Saturday at Elmore against visiting Stevens Tech. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
