ROCHESTER, NY - Three Hartwick women's soccer players were recognized as the Empire 8 Conference announced its 2009 teams. Senior back Marissa Mackay (Stillwater, NY/Stillwater) was a first team selection while midfielder Kate Bosy (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) and forward Lauren Ploof (Hammond, NY/Hammond) received honorable mention.
Mackay earns her place on the first team for the first time in her three-year career with the Hawks. A transfer from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI, Mackay received honorable mention from the E8 in each of her last two seasons with the Blue and White. In 2009, she recorded her first career goal in a Hartwick uniform in the opening game of the season. Mackay scored the game's first goal in a 3-2 overtime win over Marywood to earn 'Wick's first Erinn K. Brozman Memorial Cup title. Mackay played in 51 of the Hawks' 52 matches over the last three years, making 50 starts.
Bosy, a junior transfer from St. Francis University, started 14 of 15 games in the Hartwick midfield in her first season with the program. Bosy was Hartwick's leading shot taker and registered a goal and an assist. She scored the game-winning goal over Marywood in overtime to help 'Wick to the Brozman Cup. She also picked up a helper in a big 2-1 win over RIT. Bosy was named the Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 8 after her game-clinching goal over Marywood.
Ploof led the Hawks in scoring this season with three goals and an assist. She scored two goals in the final 12 and a half minutes against Fisher to send the game into overtime on Sept. 26 and registered the game-winner against RIT with less than four minutes to play a week later. In her two seasons with 'Wick after transferring from SUNY Canton, she has accumulated 10 goals and six assists for 26 points.
Ploof was also Hartwick's representative on the E8 Sportswoman of the Year Team for consistently maintaining a high level of sportsmanship and fair play throughout the 2009 campaign.
The Hawks closed out the 2009 season with a 5-10 record and a 4-4 mark in the Empire 8. The Hawks ended up fifth in the E8 tables and were just a game from qualifying for the conference semifinals. 'Wick's finish in the conference was its best since the 2002 season.
