Hartwick Earns Swimming and Diving Sweep Over St. Lawrence

Freshman Stephanie Ha won two events Saturday.

CANTON, NY - Hartwick's men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned victories over St. Lawrence at Augsbury Natatorium in Canton on Saturday afternoon. The 'Wick women improved to 7-5 in this season with a 138-82 rout of the Saints. On the men's side, the Hawks scored their eighth win, 144-93.

The Hawks earned 16 individual wins on the day, nine for the women and seven for the men. Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA) and Ashley Brinkman (Ottawa, OH) each won a pair of events for the women's team, while Kevin Milkovich (Newburgh, NY) earned top billing in three events and Michael Phillips (Austin, TX) was first in two races for the men.

Ha won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:01.17 and the 100-yard freestyle in 56.10. Brinkman swept the women's 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. She earned a score of 241.50 in the 1-meter competition and picked up a personal-best and pool record in the 3-meter with a 249.30.

Erin Gray (Gardner, MA), Shannan Lambert (Gardner, MA), Casey Whittaker (Salisbury, MA), Robyn Smith (Jupiter, FL), and Gabby Evans (Gardner, MA) also earned first-place efforts for the Hawks on the day. Gray was first in the 1000 free (11:01.59), Lambert took the top spot in the 200 individual medley (2:18.71), and Whittaker was first in the 200 butterfly (2:17.93). Smith's time of 2:16.68 in the 200 backstroke, and Evans' mark of 5:33.82 in the 500 free also were good enough for first place.

Abby Wright (Holliston, MA), Kate Ahrendtsen (New Hartford, NY), Ha and Lambert also won the 400 medley relay with Smith, Samantha McFarland (Derry, PA), Lambert and Kristie Grunert (Oakland, CA) taking the 400 free relay.

Milkovich won the 1000 freestyle (10:10.02), the 200 individual medley (2:03.55), and the 200 fly (2:03.76) to lead the 'Wick men. Phillips won the 500 free (4:58.93) and the 200 breaststroke (2:11.27). His time in the 200 breast was a pool record breaking the previous record set in 1982. He has now captured five races in his last two meets.

Chris French (Newtown, CT) also took first in the 100 free with a time of 50.83, and Steve VanDuzer (Tunkhannock, PA) won the 50 free event in 22.27 seconds.

Eric Goble (Bellefontaine, OH), Kaird Durocher (Bethlehem, PA), Billy MacElveen (Poughkeepsie, NY), and Tomie Schoening (Edan Prairie, MN) combined to take the 400 medley relay for Hartwick. Schoening, Brett Mann (Saratoga Springs, NY), French and VanDuzer also won the 400 free relay.

The Hawks return home next weekend for their first home meet of 2009. The teams will host Fredonia State at Moyer Pool beginning at 1 p.m.
