
ONEONTA, NY - Records fell and NCAA provisional scores were produced in both men's and women's swimming and diving meets for the Hawks on Saturday at Moyer Pool. The Hartwick men finished their meet with a 177.5-121.5 victory over Fredonia State with the women winning downing the Blue Devils 174-124.
Freshman Josh Morey (Gloversville, NY) earned a pair of NCAA provisional qualifying scores in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions. He recorded a score of 265.65 in the 1-meter event, and 279.50 in the 3-meter.
Freshman Michael Phillips (Austin, TX) and senior Kevin Milkovich (Newburgh, NY) each won three races on the day for Hartwick. Phillips was first in the 200 breaststroke setting a Moyer Pool record with a time of 2:10.73. His time broke the previous mark set by Jay Kalbach in 1997. Phillips would also capture top billing in the 200 freestyle (1:47.46) and the 100 breaststroke (1:02.36). Milkovich finished first in the 500 freestyle (4:55.90), 1000 freestyle (10:15.25), and the 200 individual medley (2:02.83).
Senior Steve VanDuzer (Tunkhannock, PA) also won two events on the day for the Hawks. He won the 100 butterfly ending the race in 55.80 and the 100 freestyle in 50.58. Sophomore Eric Goble (Bellefontaine, OH) took the top spot in the 200 butterfly in 2:04.98.
'Wick also won the 200 medley relay. Billy MacElveen (Poughkeepsie, NY), Phillips, VanDuzer, and Tomie Schoening (Edan Prairie, MN) combined for a time of 1:38.84.
Ashley Brinkman (Ottawa, OH) finished second in the 3-meter diving event earning an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying score of 256.16 to highlight the Hartwick women's meet. Brinkman also broke the HC record in the 1-meter event with a score of 249.95.
Freshman Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA), senior Casey Whittaker (Salisbury, MA), and junior Erin Gray (Gardner, MA) combined to win seven events for the Blue and White. Ha won the 100 free (55.58), 200 free (2:00.59), and set a pool record in the 100 butterfly (1:00.57). Whittaker took first in the 200 fly (2:17.12) and 200 breast (2:36.43), and Gray won the distance events with a time of 5:31.88 in the 500 free and 11:08.00 in the 1000 free.
Senior Katie Swanson (Franklin, MA) won the 200 individual medley (2:18.87), and Abby Wright (Holliston, MA), Kate Ahrendtsen (New Hartford, NY), Ha, and Kristie Grunert (Oakland, CA) combined to score a victory in the 200 medley relay (1:54.77).
Both Hartwick teams will be back in action next Saturday and Sunday. The Hawks travel to Alfred on Jan. 31 and host Oneonta State and Monroe County Community College in their final home meet of the 2008-09 season on Feb. 1.
