Hartwick Swim Teams Split With New Paltz

Kate Ahrendtsen was part of the 'Wick 200 medley relay team that won Friday night against New Paltz.

ONEONTA, NY - The Hartwick men's swim team downed New Paltz, 119.5-85.5, on Friday night at Moyer Pool, while the women's team fell just short, 108-97.

The Hartwick men won seven events on the night including two by Steven VanDuzer (Tunkhannock, PA) and two by Michael Phillips (Austin, TX). VanDuzer took the top spot in the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly, while Phillips won the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle events.

'Wick led as a team from start to finish as Billy MacElveen (Poughkeepsie, NY), Gregg Ducey (Saunderstown, RI), VanDuzer and Tommie Schoening (Edan Prairie, MN) combined to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:38.24 to open the meet.

The Hawks would also take first in four of the next five events to take command. Kevin Milkovich (Newburgh, NY) won the 1000 freestyle, and VanDuzer and Phillips won the other three events in the span. Phillips and Milkovich then finished 1-2 in the 500 freestyle and Ducey added a win in the 100 breaststroke in the second-to-last event of the night.

The Hartwick women trailed 97-91 entering the final event of the 200 freestyle relay. New Paltz would edge 'Wick by 1.12 seconds in the relay to emerge with the team win.

The two Hawk team battled back and forth for the entire night. Hartwick held an 80-70 lead with three events to go after a 1-2 finish from Robyn Smith (Jupiter, FL) and Abby Wright (Holliston, MA), but New Paltz stormed back to cut the lead to one point, 85-84, after the 500 freestyle and took the lead 97-91 after the 100 breaststroke to set up the dramatic final relay.

Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA) won both the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly to highlight the night. Ha touched the wall in 2:16.51 in the IM and 1:00.77 in the butterfly event. Wright, Kate Ahrendtsen (New Hartford, NY), Ha, and Katie Swanson (Franklin, MA) also earned a victory for 'Wick in the 200 medley relay to open the meet. Both

Hawk teams are back in action on November 8th. The Hawks' swim teams will host LeMoyne College at 1 p.m. at Moyer Pool.
