SYRACUSE, NY - Hartwick's women's swimming and diving team continued competition at the UNYSCSA/Empire 8 meet on Saturday at Nottingham High School in Syracuse. The Hawk 200 medley relay team highlighted the day with a College record-breaking performance.
Hartwick, with 425.5 points, remains in 7th place out of 17 teams competing in the state competition. 'Wick also ranks 4th in the Empire 8 standings behind Ithaca, Stevens and Nazareth heading into the final day tomorrow.
The 200 medley relay team, which consists of sophomores Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA), Robyn Smith (Jupiter, FL), Kristen Grunert (Oakland, CA), and freshman Whitney Fletcher (Superior, CO), broke the all-time Hartwick mark in the preliminaries with a time of 1:50.31, taking more than a second and a half off the previous best set in 2004. The team would end up 6th in the state with a finals time of 1:50.87.
Ha, who set the Hartwick record in the 200 IM last night, earned the highest Hartwick individual finish tonight with a fourth place showing in the 100 butterfly. Her time of 58.50 was a personal best and her second NCAA B-cut time of the competition. Mallory Weber (Naperville, IL) placed 17th in the state in the event.
Fletcher earned B-cut times in both the preliminary round and the finals of the 100 breaststroke. She swam the prelims in 1:06.85, besting her own College record in the event, and turned in a 1:07.16 showing in the finals. Sophomore Grace Encherman (Pittsford, NY) took 21st.
Sophomore Katie Holmes (Cotuit, MA) recorded a 7th place effort in the 100 backstroke event for Hartwick. Her preliminary round time of 1:01.71 marked the 7th fastest time in College history. Senior Erin Gray (Gardner, MA) swam to 13th in the finals of the 400 individual medley in 4:52.69. Her time ranks 8th all-time at Hartwick. Sophomore Sam McFarland (Derry, PA) was also 22nd (2:02.05) in the 200 freestyle.
The meet will end on Saturday with the final seven events of the competition. Preliminaries begin at 10:30 a.m., while the finals get underway at 6:30 p.m.
