PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The Hartwick volleyball team dropped a pair of Empire 8 Conference matches Sunday afternoon on the campus of St. John Fisher. The Hawks fell to Stevens Tech 24-30, 30-24, 22-30, 21-30 and then dropped a tough 30-23, 30-21, 22-30, 25-30, 13-15 decision to St. John Fisher.
The tough loss to St. John Fisher overshadowed the feats of Christina Evans (Cedar Hills, Utah) and Kerry Sisson (Ballston Spa, N.Y.). Evans posted a school-record 30 kills and added a season-high 34 digs in the loss to the Cardinals. The sophomore's kill total bested the former mark of 26 set three times, most recently by Laura Frey on September 4, 2004 against Utica.
Sisson's match-high 53 digs bettered the former Hartwick single-match record of 50 set by Leslie Areman in 1999 against Plattsburgh State. Senior Abby Cummings (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Kate Simmons (East Kingston, N.H.) also posted solid numbers against Fisher. Cummings tallied 15 kills and broke a personal best 44 digs, while Simmons had a 14-kill, 13-dig effort.
Evans opened the day with a team-best 17 kills and 19 digs in the four-game loss to Stevens, which was selected as the preseason favorite by Empire 8 coaches. Cummings chipped in 33 digs, while freshman setter Megan Lemery (South Glen Falls, N.Y.) dished off 22 assists.
Hartwick, now 7-9 overall and 1-3 in the Empire 8, will return home to host the Holiday Inn Classic this Friday and Saturday at Binder Gym. The Hawks will open play at 6:15 p.m. Friday evening as they tangle with SUNY-IT. Hartwick will then turn around and play Alfred at 8:15 p.m.
