ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Hartwick volleyball team split its final two matches at the Oneonta State Tournament. In the opener, the Hawks defeated Plattsburgh State 30-15, 30-28, 28-30, 30-21 before falling to Potsdam State 30-25, 30-25, 30-22 in the finale, Saturday.
Abby Cummings (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee HS), who was Hartwick's lone representative of the all-tournament team, continued her strong play in the young season with a team-best 14 kills and added 10 digs in the victory over Plattsburgh. Freshman Melissa Mueller (South Glen Falls, N.Y.) contributed 10 kills and three blocks, while Megan Lemery (South Glen Falls, N.Y./South Glen Falls HS) dished off 32 assists. Senior Mary Janczak (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa HS) led the Hawks defensively with 28 digs.
In the loss to Potsdam, Cummings and Christina Evans (Cedar Hills, Utah) each registered 10 kills. Janczak posted a team-high 22 digs, while Evans and Cummings added 20 and 18 respectively.
Hartwick, 2-2 overall, returns to action September 7, as it travels to Elmira to participate in the Elmira College Tournament. The Hawks will open with Manhattanville and then will tangle with Pittsburgh-Bradford in two matches beginning at 6 p.m.
