ROCHESTER, NY - Freshman middle blocker Courtney Desmond (Cortlandt Manor, NY) was recognized by the Empire 8 coaches for her stellar first season with Hartwick as the Empire 8 announced its 2008 all-conference awards late last week. Desmond received Honorable Mention and was named to the conference Sportswoman of the Year team. She was also the only freshman of 18 players recognized on this year's Empire 8 squads.
Desmond finished her first campaign with the Hawks with team-bests of 223 kills and 106 blocks. She also recorded 139 assists, 88 digs and 39 aces in 37 matches. She was named the Empire 8 Rookie of the Week on Sept. 1 and Oct. 26.
In Desmond's first match as a Hawk, she recorded 15 kills and three blocks in a 3-1 win over Utica College. She would match her season-high on Oct. 24 with 15 kills against RIT. She also added eight assists and a season-high eight blocks against the Tigers in a tough 3-2 setback. Desmond was also named to the 2008 Volleyball Sportswoman of the Year Team. One member of each team was named that institution's representative.
The Empire 8 emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission. Desmond has distinguished herself and consistently exhibits the critical traits as an outstanding sportswoman.
The Hawks finished the season on Saturday at Elmira College with a final overall record of 12-25.
