ROCHESTER, NY - The Empire 8 recently announced its conference all-stars for the 2009 campaign. Hartwick College's Courtney Desmond (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) and Lauren Mausert (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) were both recognized for their efforts this season. Desmond earned honorable mention for the second straight year. Mausert was named to the 2009 Empire 8 Volleyball Sportswoman of the Year Team.
Desmond, a sophomore middle hitter for the Hawks, led the team in kills (262), hitting percentage (.235), service aces (55), solo blocks (28), assisted blocks (69), and total blocks (97). In Empire 8 matches in 2009, Desmond was tied for 2nd in blocks (1.04/set), 7th in hitting percentage (.272), and 9th in kills (2.62/set).
In her two seasons with the Hartwick volleyball program, she has already cracked the all-time top 10 in career blocks (203) and career service aces (94). Last season, Desmond twice was named conference rookie of the week and was the only freshman of 18 players recognized on the Empire 8 postseason squads.
One member of each conference team was named that institution's representative on the Sportswoman of the Year Team. The Empire 8 emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission. Mausert has distinguished herself and consistently exhibits the critical traits as an outstanding sportswoman throughout the season.
Hartwick wrapped up the season on Saturday with a 10-20 overall record.
