Eight 'Wick Water Polo Players Named to Scholar-Athlete Team; Hawks Finish 6th in Team GPA

  June 19, 2009
Freshman Lisa Bass

BRIDGEPORT, PA - Eight Hartwick College athletes were recently honored as the Collegiate Water Polo Association announced its 2009 Women's Scholar-Athlete Team earlier this week. Hartwick also finished ranked sixth in the country in team grade-point average.

Eighty-two student-athletes from varsity teams around the nation were named to this year's CWPA Scholar-Athlete Team. The program honors varsity student-athletes who have achieved grade point averages of 3.2 or higher and competed during the 2009 women's season. Athletes are recognized on three levels: 3.2 to 3.4 (excellent), 3.41 to 3.7 (superior) and 3.71 to 4.0 (outstanding).

Freshman driver Lisa Bass (Montreal, QC/Lindsay Place) was one of only 19 Division I varsity athletes and the lone Hartwick player to earn distinction in the "outstanding" category. Senior utility Barbara Amaro (Sao Paulo, Brazil/MacKenzie Presbyterian), junior utility Christina Evans (Cedar Hills, UT/Lone Peak), sophomore goalie Jess Dorman (Auckland, New Zealand/Diocesan), and freshman center Allyssa Analytis (Montreal, QC/John Abbott College) all were in the "superior" classification. Senior driver Stefani Toungate (League City, TX/Clear Creek), sophomore driver Stephanie Abajian (La Canada, CA/La Canada), and freshman utility Sian Ells-Tewhiu (Wellington, New Zealand/Queen Margaret College) ranked in the category of "excellent."

Only a handful of schools in the CWPA performed better in the classroom than the Hawks in 2009. Hartwick was one of only five institutions with a 3.2 average or better. Harvard University finished tops in the country with a 3.39. The Crimson was followed by Washington & Jefferson College(3.36), Brown University (3.35), Indiana University (3.25), University of Maryland (3.21), and Hartwick (3.2).
