  July 1, 2010

BRIDGEPORT, PA - Six Hartwick College athletes were recently honored as the Collegiate Water Polo Association announced its 2010 Women's Scholar-Athlete Team earlier this week. Hartwick also ranked tied for 16th in the country in team grade-point average.

Two hundred eighty-nine student-athletes from around the nation were named to this year's CWPA Scholar-Athlete Team. The program honors varsity student-athletes who have achieved grade point averages of 3.2 or higher and competed during the 2010 women's season. Athletes are recognized on three levels: 3.2 to 3.4 (excellent), 3.41 to 3.7 (superior) and 3.71 to 4.0 (outstanding).

Jess DormanJunior goalie Jess Dorman (Auckland, New Zealand/Diocesan), who garnered the Hawks' top GPA with a 3.60, earned distinction in the "superior" category. It marks the third consecutive year she has gained CWPA Scholar-Athlete honors.

Christina EvansFreshman center Martina Shorkey (Hollywood, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas), freshman driver Laura Kuzma (Saline, MI/Saline), freshman defender Megan Clampitt (Huntley, IL/Barrington), and senior center Christina Evans (Cedar Hills, UT/Lone Peak) joined Dorman in the "superior" classification. Evans closes out her career as just the third player in Hartwick history to make the CWPA Scholar-Athlete Team in all four years of competition after Kristin Hardman (2001-2004) and Kate Chambers (2002-2006) both accomplished the feat.

Freshman driver Shannon Leonard (Pointe Clair, Quebec/John Rennie) ranked in the category of "excellent."

Only a handful of schools in women's collegiate water polo performed better in the classroom than the Hawks in 2010. Hartwick earned a team GPA of 3.10, tying for 16th highest with California State East Bay.

Hartwick water polo finished the 2010 season with 25 wins and just six losses for the team's highest winning percentage (.806) in program history. The Hawks also won their 10th straight CWPA Northern Division title.
