  October 24, 2009

ROCHESTER, NY - On Saturday, the Hartwick men's and women's cross country teams competed at the NYSCTC Championships. This season's championships were contested among the scarlet leafed oaks and rambling grass trails of Genesee Valley Park in Rochester, NY.

On both sides, the race was dominated by the nationally ranked St. Lawrence Saints whose teams impressed all by placing five scoring runners within the top ten. Amidst a stellar field of some of New York State's most formidable cross country schools, the Hartwick women finished 9th while the men ended the day in 10th.

Leading the women over the 5k (3.1 mile) course was senior captain Gabby Dello (Mount Upton, NY/Delhi) who placed 60th in 21:12. Junior Laura Gray (New Windsor, NY/Howell) continued to impress with a 66th place finish in 21:21. Erika Gates (Vestal, NY/Vestal) was 70th in 21:38, freshman Sheila Niedziela (Sprakers, NY/Fonda Fultonville) was 82nd in 22:12, and rounding out the scoring was junior Kim Negrich (Mayfield, NY/Mayfield) in 90th in 22:55.

The men's efforts were led by junior captain Tim Sattler (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) who turned in a 77th place finish in 29:45. Freshman Ethan Staats (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) was 85th in 30:12, freshman John Stuligross (Kenosha, WI/Kenosha Bradford) placed 88th in 30:55, junior Justin Pedersen (Gilbertsville, NY/Gilbertsville Mount Upton) took 89th in 30:58, and moving up to 5th spot on the team was freshman Keir Alexander (Pound Ridge, NY/Fox Lane) in 100th in 34:00. Other Hartwick finishers were freshman Matthew Koski (Carlisle, MA/Concord Carlisle) and junior Ben Wronkoski (Salisbury Center, NY/Dolgeville).

Hartwick's runners are back at it next weekend in Saratoga Springs, NY. The Hawks compete at the Saratoga Invitational which also doubles as the Empire 8 Championships.
