'Wick Swimming and Diving Splits at Alfred

ALFRED, NY - The Hartwick College swimming and diving teams split at Alfred University on Saturday at Lebohner Pool. The 'Wick women won every event but one in a 148-83 over the Saxons. The Hawks improved to 9-5, and won their third straight meet in the process. The Hawk men's team dropped a 130-98 decision to the Alfred men's team, which has captured the last two Empire 8 team titles. The 'Wick men are 9-5 on the season.

Seniors Casey Whittaker (Salisbury, MA) and Ashley Brinkman (Ottawa, OH) and junior Erin Gray (Gardner, MA) each won two different events to pace the Hartwick women. Whittaker won the 200 fly (2:17.34) and the 200 breaststroke (2:37.53), and Brinkman swept the diving events with a score of 223.35 in the 1-meter event and 263.85 in the 3-meter competition. Gray recorded first-place finishes in the 500 freestyle (5:33.96) and the 1000 free (11:12.77).

A trio of Hartwick freshman also earned individual firsts on the day. Robyn Smith (Jupiter, FL) took first in the 100 free with a time of 57.08 and Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA) placed first in the 200 IM in 2:16.10. Samantha McFarland (Derry, PA) also turned in a first-place effort in the 200 free in 2:03.32.

Kate Ahrendtsen (New Hartford, NY), Katie Swanson (Franklin, NY), Devon Fuller (Clarkesville, GA), and Abby Wright (Holliston, MA) combined to win the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:20.78. The team of Katie Holmes (Cotuit, MA), Grace Enchermann (Pittsford, NY), Whittaker, and Erin Fleming (Northampton, MA) was second.

Ha, McFarland, Fleming, and Shannan Lambert (Gardner, MA) teamed up to take the top spot in the 400 free relay. Fuller, Enchermann Smith and Kristie Grunert (Oakland, CA) combined for second.

Kevin Milkovich (Newburgh, NY) won the lone race of the day for the 'Wick men in the 200 butterfly. He ended the race with a final time of 2:01.19. Milkovich also took second in the 1000 free (10:05.88) and the 500 free (4:59.53).

Freshmen Michael Phillips (Austin, TX) and Josh Morey (Gloversville, NY) each placed second in a pair of events. Phillips earned a time of 2:02.51 in the 200 IM and 2:17.01 in the 200 breast. Morey earned a score of 254.00 in 1-meter diving and 257.65 in the 3-meter event.

Seniors Steve Van Duzer (Tunkhannock, PA) and Tomie Schoening (Edan Prairie, MN) also earned second-place finishes for the Hawks. Van Duzer ended the 50 freestyle in 22.56 and Schoening capped the 200 back in 2:03.75.

The Hawks return to Moyer Pool tomorrow against Oneonta State and Monroe Community College. Diving begins at 9:30 a.m. and swimming starts at 1 p.m. Prior to the swimming events, the 14 Hartwick men's and women's swimming and diving seniors will be honored as they will be competing in their final home meet.
