
ONEONTA, NY - The Hartwick men's swim team stayed perfect on the year at 4-0 with a 124-113 win over Le Moyne while the women fell to the Dolphins 128-114 at Moyer Pool on Saturday.
Senior Kevin Milkovich (Newburgh, NY) highlighted the day with three wins in the 500 and 1000 freestyles and the 200 butterfly. Michael Phillips (Austin, TX) was a double winner in the 200 individual medley and the 200 breaststroke. Junior Erin Gray (Gardner, MA) and senior Ashley Brinkman (Ottawa, OH) were both double winners for the Hawks on the women's side. Gray took the top spot in both the 500 and 1000 freestyles and Brinkman had the top scores in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.
The men's meet was back and forth throughout. Through six events, Le Moyne led 59-50 with Milkovich taking the 1000 free with a time of 10:37.18, and Phillips winning the 200 IM in 1:58.95. Milkovich and John Gaehring (Avon, NY) then finished 1-2 in the 200 fly to give the Hawks a brief two-point lead before the Dolphins regained the advantage in the 100 free and the 200 backstroke, 87-79. Milkovich and Brett Mann (Saratoga Springs, NY) drew 'Wick to within one point with a 1-2 finish in the 500 free before the Hawks took the lead for good following the 3-meter diving event. Josh Morey (Gloversville, NY) took first in the event with a score of 219.25 and Nate Quinn (Fonda, NY) was second with 212.85. Phillips would seal the team win in the 200 breast with a first-place time of 2:12.49.
Gray and Gabby Evans (Gardner, MA) finished first and second in the 1000 freestyle and Robyn Smith (Jupiter, FL) and Kristen Grunert (Oakland, CA) were 1-2 in the 50 free through the first four women's events. Brinkman then took the top spot in 1-meter diving with a score of 213.90. The Dolphins took a 94-75 lead with four events remaining. Gray would then win the 500 free with a time of 5:29.20, and Brinkman and Brittany Sherburn (Franconia, NH) placed first and second in 3-meter diving to pull to within six points, 106-100. LeMoyne would win the 200 breast and the 400 Free Relay in the day's final two events to emerge with the team victory.
A total of four pool records were set on the day by Le Moyne swimmers. The Dolphin men set a new record in the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 3:35.69 breaking the mark set by Hartwick's Jon Schnell, Jay Kalbach, Martin Engstrom-Heg, and Henry Huford in 1995. Stephanie Busch's 1998 record in the 200 IM also fell, as well as records set by Ithaca in the 200 backstroke (1994) and in the 400 freestyle relay (1988).
Hartwick swimming and diving is back in action tomorrow in their first road meet. The Hawks face RPI at 1 p.m. in Troy, NY.
