Hawk Women 2nd, Men 3rd After Day One of Don Richards Invitational

ROCHESTER, NY - The Hartwick College men's and women's swim teams opened competition at the 2008 Don Richards Invitational at Judson Pool on the campus of RIT on Friday. The Hawk women's team is 2nd out of five teams, while the 'Wick men are 3rd.

Ithaca leads the women's competition with 162 points. The Hawks trail the Bombers by just 32 points.

Senior Ashley Brinkman (Ottawa, OH) took second place in the 3-meter diving competition to earn 17 points for Hartwick. She finished with a score of 341.75 behind Naz's Lindsay Buzard who registered a 355.65.

Junior Erin Gray (Gardner, MA) and sophomore Gabby Evans (Gardner, MA) placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 1650-yard freestyle event. Gray's time in the finals was 18:39.26. Evans was just over two seconds behind her with a time of 18:41.55.

'Wick's 200-yard Medley Relay team, consisting of Abby Wright (Holliston, MA), Kate Ahrendtsen (New Hartford, NY), Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA), and Kristie Grunert (Oakland, CA), finished third in 1:54.98.

On the men's side, the Hawks have accumulated 111 points and are chasing first-place Alfred (140 points) and second-place Ithaca (127).

Senior Kevin Milkovich (Newburgh, NY) took top honors for 'Wick in the 1650-yard freestyle. His finals time of 16:58.34 broke his own pool record from last year and was just under four seconds faster than second-place Joe Gage from Ithaca.

The Hartwick "A" squad finished second in the 200-yard Medley Relay with a final time of 1:38.15. The team consisted of sophomore Billy MacElveen (Poughkeepsie, NY), senior Gregg Ducey (Saunderstown, RI), senior Steve VanDuzer (Tunkhannock, PA), and freshman Michael Phillips (Austin, TX). The Hartwick "B" squad of Chris French (Newtown, CT), Milkovich, Eric Goble (Bellefontaine, OH), and Kaird Durocher (Bethlehem, PA) earned a time of 1:42.64 which was faster than last season's 'Wick "A" team at the invitational.

The second day of the three-day competition begins tomorrow at 10 a.m.
