VanDuzer, Ha Record First-Place Efforts on Final Day of Competition at RIT

ROCHESTER, NY - Senior Steve VanDuzer (Tunkhannock, PA) and freshman Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA) each picked up first-place finishes on Sunday to lead the Hartwick men's and women's swimming diving teams in the final day of competition at the RIT Don Richards Invitational. Both teams ended up second out of five teams.

The Hartwick men finished competition with 623 points, 69 shy of first-place Alfred. VanDuzer captured top honors in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.96. He placed second in the 50-yard freestyle touching the wall in 21.71, just .08 out of first. VanDuzer also teamed with Eric Goble (Bellefontaine, OH), Gregg Ducey (Saunderstown, RI), and Michael Phillips (Austin, TX) for a second-place finish in the 400-yard Medley Relay. The Tunkhannock, PA native also was part of the 200 and 400-yard Freestyle Relay teams which both took third place.

Phillips was second in the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.46) and 4th in the 200-yard freestyle after taking first and setting a pool record in the 200 breaststroke yesterday. Kevin Milkovich (Newburgh, NY) was also second in the 400 I.M. (4:20.92) and Tomie Schoening (Edan Prairie, MN), Billy MacElveen (Poughkeepsie, NY), and Chris French (Newtown, CT) ended up 2-3-4 in the 100 backstroke.

Ha was first in the 400 individual medley (4:48.45), second in the 200 I.M. (2:14.84), and third in the 100 butterfly (59.89) on the day to lead the Hartwick women. She was joined by Ashley Brinkman (Ottawa, OH) who won the 1-meter diving event, as the Hartwick first-place efforts on the weekend. The team recorded 626 points, 48 in front of third-place Nazareth. Ithaca won the three-day competition with 722 points. Erin Gray (Gardner, MA) took second place in the 500 freestyle event with a final time of 5:27.93. Robyn Smith (Jupiter, FL) was second in the 100 backstroke (1:02.34), just .63 from first. Abby Wright (Holliston, MA), Kate Ahrendtsen (New Hartford, NY), Ha, and Kristen Grunert (Oakland, CA) also turned in a third-place effort in the 400 Medley Relay for the Hawks.

Hartwick's swimming and diving teams will head to Puerto Rico on Dec. 12 for training. Their next date of competition is Jan. 10th with a tri-meet with Union and Springfield in Schenectady, NY.
