The campaign for Hartwick students

Education, Language, and Culture of Vietnam

Location: Cities and villages of Vietnam

Course: EDUC 255

In this southeast Asian country, 1,000-year-old traditions are alive and respected. Exploring the mesmerizing city of Saigon and surrounding villages allows students to observe traditional Vietnamese and contemporary international educational practices in local schools. Traveling to the Central Highlands and exploring the town of Da Lat (City of Eternal Spring), visiting local orphanages, learning basic Vietnamese language skills, encountering the long-tailed macaque monkey on Monkey Island, snorkeling through coral reefs around Hon Tre Island, and visiting the white beaches of Mui Ne is all part of becoming engaged in the Vietnamese culture.

Instructors: Assistant Professor of Education Gregory Smith and Alana Smith
Length of program: 23 days

Beth and I have endowed a Hartwick scholarship in the name of my parents. I, like so many of our own students, was a first generation student. My parents did not have the opportunity to go to college, but they made sure that I did. The Campaign for Hartwick Students creates opportunities for everyone who benefitted from the generosity of others to give back. That is what I feel we are doing through our endowed scholarship fund at Hartwick. I often ask our alumni and many College friends, ‘Who helped you?’ Someone helped each one of us reach our goals and define our dreams. Now it’s our turn.
