This Faculty Resource section was created for instructors and academic advisors who may have students with special needs/disabilities in their classroom or as an advisee. The Coordinator of Disability Services provides learning support services for qualified students with disabilities and special needs in order to comply to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the American Disability Act. Besides assuring the physical accessibility of students with physical challenges, the Coordinator also assures that academic accommodations such as extended time on exams or supplemental notes are provided for students with learning disabilities or ADD/ADHD. Other academic accommodations are permitted based on individual needs and are related to the functional limitations of the disorder. It is ultimately the responsibility of the faculty to insure that the accommodation is provided. A good communication between faculty and the Coordinator is essential so that the college maintains the essential elements of a course and adheres to reasonable accommodations based on the disability laws.
The Coordinator, also provides study skill assistance to any student on campus and will meet individually with students to assist students with time management goal setting and college level reading strategies.
