Counseling Center

What is counseling?
Counseling is a process of exploring one's self and one's experiences with a trained professional in a safe, supportive setting that is private. The process is one in which a person works to honestly clarify thoughts, feelings, and relationship issues with a non-judgmental professional. The counselor will not tell a student what to do, rather will offer guidance toward the student's own resolution of difficulties over a period of time. Some results of work with a counselor can be increased personal self value, coping skills, and strength.

This is a time of new experiences, relationships, and growth. No one leaves college quite the same person as when s/he entered. Daily experiences all have an impact on the way we think and feel about people and the world. With much to learn about so many different things, it is essential that each person tries to maintain a clear understanding of self and experiences. (More about counseling...)

Counseling
The first time a person meets with a counselor, the counselor will help to ease the person through a first session. S/he will outline the processes of counseling, including an emphasis on confidentiality, will listen carefully to the person's concerns that brought her/him to the session, and will clarify times of meeting in the future. It will be made clear that one meeting might not suffice to address the concern(s). During the time(s) spent with a counselor a person might come to trust the counselor so that s/he can move toward greater self understanding.

Counseling is confidential. Information from counseling sessions, from consultations with College professionals, and from referrals by outside professionals is considered private. A student must give written permission for a counselor to share information with the student's parent(s). When necessitated by potential health emergencies and/or life- threatening situations, information may be shared by a counselor with pertinent other professionals. The counselor will tell the student of this necessity. This policy is in accord with professional counseling standards.

Any issue(s) of concern to a student while at Hartwick are appropriate, such as:

  • relationships: family, professors, peers, sexual partners
  • academic and social stress/anxiety
  • substance use
  • nutrition and body image
  • self injury
  • troublesome feelings/moods
  • loss of a loved one
