Community Involvement & Volunteerism (CIV)

Hartwick's student organization that serves our community- Take One Step Beyond.

Hartwick students go beyond the classroom and gain skills for a lifetime while serving communities locally as well as nationally during Habitat for Humanity's Collegiate Challenge.

CIV is our campus student office for civic engagement. CIV seeks to enable others to help meet the needs of our surrounding community.

Civic engagement allows students to appropriate their home community and previous experiences. Involving one's self in the community is a wonderful way to show appreciation for the support the community provides. Civic engagement also allows for the opportunity of personal and communal growth.

It is important for students to challenge themselves--within the clasroom and without. The mutually rewarding experience of providing a service to the community is such a challenge, but one that many students choose to be a part of--often for the rest of their lives. Volunteer today and know how it feels to make a difference for a lifetime.

How to get involved:

  • Stop by the CIV office on the 4th floor of Dewar Union and pick up an application.
  • Return your application indicating your areas of interests.
  • Participate in the on-going projects on campus and within the community.

We will:

  • Send emails regularly regarding current opportunities in the Oneonta community.

Service Hours:

  • CIV is now using an online database to record students' service hours. You can record your own hours by visiting www.presidentialserviceawards.gov.
  • Students are eligible for two kinds of recognition. If students complete 200 hours or more of service they will receive recognition through CIV at graduation. The presidential awards have a separate set of requirements. If students meet those requirements, they will likewise receive appropriate recognition for their accomplishments.
