- President's Report: - Gardner:
- VP Doboze resigned so we're in the process of getting letters to fill his position you're all encouraged to put in letters. They're due by 5pm tomorrow to Senate@hartwick.edu and you'll hear back from me either Wednesday or Thursday. Personally, if you put in a letter. You will know of my choice for appointment before Tuesday.
- Gardner: We have a removal for tonight. Senator Intriligator has missed four senate meetings and per our constitution he is up for removal. He was informed of his removal and that he had the right to come and defend himself before senate. He is not here to defend himself. Essentially, you can run it one of two ways: you can vote to remove him or you can vote to keep him on senate. That requires a motion. You can also discuss it.
- Jones: motion to remove senator Intriligator
- Fiteni: seconded
- Motion Passes
- Jones: motion to remove senator Intriligator
- Gardner: as per our conversation last week, I e-mailed the president of All Greek Council and she has not gotten back to me as far as filling the sorority rep.
- Blea: will we be filling the fraternity position as well?
- Gardner: it depends on what senate feels as a whole-like last week.
- Blea: I motion to allow All Greek Council to have another fraternity rep.
- Fiteni: seconded
- DesRoberts: were these members appointed or nominated by Greek life?
- Gardner: I believe that the reps were just told to do it, they didn't seem very interested. The Greek Council President needs to appoint members who are interested and who actually come to Senate Meetings. I also told her not to complain when something comes up and Greek Life has no voice on Student Senate
- VP Schultz: how many more meetings to we have for the rest of the semester?
- About five?
- Schultz: five more meetings, the All Greek Council has still not gotten back to President Gardner. While I feel its important to have Greek representation, I don't see the point in giving President Gardner more things to deal with right now
- Parker: the senate passed to select a new sorority member, why not do the same thing for fraternity. I mean, neither of them show up.
- Utterback: we should give them the option to nominate someone and if no one is interested then they just won't send us a rep.
- Blea: all President Gardner needs to do is to have someone sent to a meeting. Even if there are two meetings left then I feel they should be allowed to come.
- Vote is Called: Motion Fails
- Kendall: motion for role call vote
- Podmijersky: seconded
- VP Whetsel: thirded
- Motion Passes
- Role Call Vote: Motion Passes
- Blea: will we be filling the fraternity position as well?
- Gardner: so this spring is officially Senate's 60 year anniversary here at Hartwick. Not for this meeting but just start thinking about a. whether we want to do anything for that and b. what that "thing" could be. We could also just try and tie it into OH Fest. Just start getting that idea a-goin'.
- Blea: I could do something with graphic design
- Gardner: Also, I was asked last week what Senate is doing in conjunction with the academic theme. I responded that I had no specific plans. Senate could do something-we could make different proposals and such. Something that had come up for the last two years on senate were things like getting all of the water faucets on campus to have a little device that increases the amount of water-per-pressure so that its better overall. Another thing is replacing lights around campus with more energy efficient lights.
- Andrew Bailey Goodell: I was in a meeting with Senator DesRoberts and the entire country of Australia and half of Europe have banned incandescent light bulbs. I said that Hartwick should do the same. It would be nice to have senate say something like that. Even if only 10% of students get them, it's still better than nothing.
- Harrington: I think that may have been on our "what to buy/what not to buy" freshmen sheets.
- Fiteni: I also would like to point out that incandescent bulbs have mercury in them
- Gardner: we can't really do anything this semester. Another idea would be to see if we could get faculty and staff-perhaps have a "walk to work/carpool" day. If you think of things to do we can put together a proposal to put out to the greater Hartwick campus?
- Blea: we could also suggest that to other clubs-say that senate is behind this and ask them to promote the academic theme. It would be interested if we could get clubs behind this.
- Gardner: that's all I have.
Old Business:
- Kendall: a student brought to my attention the Van Ess door again? It's scary to walk back from the parking lot to Van Ess.
- Gardner: when I talked to Tom Kelley I will be doing our campus lighting tour next Tuesday. The reason he said they don't want to put a swipe on that door is that they get the sense that there are many Van Ess residents who would be uncomfortable with yet another entrance to the building. He knows the lighting is poor, but another door is not necessarily something that would be best. Having better lighting to have people walk around the building seems to be best. They most likely will not put a swipe there
- Kendall: the event that happened was she went to go get in that door and there were three guys outside the building.
- Gardner: you could have that same instance happen at another door.
- Lillie: I live in Van Ess. I'm the one whose window gets knocked on when people need to get let in because they don't have the key.
- Schultz: they change the key bolts because if you lose a key then anyone could get into a building. o Goodell: I think they should perhaps make another walkway?
- Parker: I don't understand, the first day there was a meeting-they said "Don't walk down the hill, it's not well lit". It was very well spoken and they let everyone know. I don't understand why it continually becomes an issue when they told is in clear language not to walk down the hill.
- DesRoberts: I don't understand the issue here, is it because there are all girls in this building? Would the solution be to make this co-ed? Is the safety issue because they're all girls and they don't want people hanging around girls?
- Parker: I don't think the all-girl dorm is the issue but rather that a key-swipe is actually on an entrance that no one ever uses and is actually less visible.
- Lillie: I would say that just as many people go in that front door… they wait there and call their friends.
- LoSardo: would be putting a blue-light button by the door?
- Parker: I found out that there are a lot of blue lights but they aren't physically blue lights, they are instead phones.
- Goodell: the year before the seniors were hear, the first floor of Van Ess was male and the other floors were female. This helped with a lot of the safety issues. When they put in the card systems, I asked if they could put a phone at every door just so, if there's nothing else in the area and you can't get in its nice if you can call your friend or security-but those phones were not put in.
- Harrington: the smith hall door on the side with the parking-lot is stays open sometimes and doesn't close all the way so anyone can come into our building.
- Riviello: make sure you tell your RAs and RDs because that would be the place to bring these types of concerns first.
- Gardner: if you notice doors aren't getting locked, tell your RA. If your RA doesn't get anything done you can bring the issue here as well. As senators you can tell Zach Brown yourself. It might just be an issue of having facilities take a little while to get this done.
- Rudy: I would get online and fill out a work-order. Facilities responds very quickly to my past few work-orders.
- LoSardo: I would like to know if there are any progress made with the student seating section with the home game.
- Gardner: I haven't yet spoken to Debbie Warren about it but I don't believe it will happen.
- DesRoberts: I no longer live at Pine Lake but I have been motioned to keep my position as representative of Pine Lake.
- Schultz: only pine lake members elected you as a senator, so would you rather keep him or have another representation.
- Kendall: I'm curious: how to people at pine lake feel about Sen. DesRoberts feel at still being the rep?
- Gardner: would it be possible for you to periodically meet with perhaps Pine Lake Club's president and you could stay as the Pine Lake rep for the remainder of the semester.
- Schultz: please get the surveys to me by Thursday. You've all done an exceptional job so far getting them done. If you could at this point just slide them under the senate office door once their completed.
- Gardner: if its possible have them somehow stay together with paperclip and maybe put a post-it on where they're from (from what dorm)
- Fiteni: there are lots of extras in the box if anyone wants more
- Blea: question-we gave ours to the RA, do you want our senators to collect them from the RAs?
- LoSardo: I went door to door and said "fill this out and in 20 minutes throw this in the hall".
- Podmijersky: did anything happen with extending the key-card hours from 7 to 9?
- Gardner: we're meeting with the cabinet Thursday and we will be able to bring it up then. I asked in week one to get the feeling of your building-is the general consensus that most building would like to have the buildings open until 9pm? Is there any building that would be against that?
- Kelsey: at Saxton, we've had a lot of things stolen and our RAs feel that extending the hours would actually increase levels of damage.
- Gardner: I don't want to see buildings have different hours of closing; I can talk to Zach Brown and see how easy it would be to do.
- Miranda: a majority of thefts are occurring from people leaving doors unlocked or leaving things unlocked. Perhaps people are just being too trusting and leaving things out, how were the things stolen? Did they go into someone's room? It's just something to think of.
- Kelsey: just to add to that, the stuff that we've had stolen is stuff from the lounge. I've seen people leave with a couch-it's school property that's being taken.
- Podmijersky: isn't it just as likely that they could get let in by someone in the building?
- Rudy: I would find it hard to believe that the majority of a building would want to stop letting people in at 7.
- Blea: how sure are you that its people outside the building?
- Gardner: I think the issue in their minds is whether or not it's external or internal theft.
- Harrington: the people I've spoken to are for extending the hour to 9, the RD is against it. Having people in the dorm after 9 who don't have a room to go into because its quiet hours, I don't think that should happen.
- Blea: I think the reason 9 was chosen is so that you have those 2 hours without having someone come down to let you in.
- Kopstein: I don't know many people who are quiet, studying at 9.
- Isbell: Wilder does not have heat OR hot water. I live on the fourth floor and I have the heat on full blast and its cold as ice. My RA and RD are aware of this.
- Harrington: I was in an elevator and they said how cold it was
- Isbell: I visited friends in New Res 2 and was amazed at how warm it could be.
- Lillie: If you talk to your RD or RA they could put in a work order.
- Gardner: in the meantime, I'll mention it to Zach Brown.
- Riviello: you should also CC e-mails to Zach Brown when you e-mail your RA and RD about the problem. That way he will know that you are trying to get things done and it is in fact your RA and RDs fault for not getting things done.
New Business:
- 3 SMRs tonight:
- SMR 1: Newman Club, $75 for their Thanksgiving Dinner
- Basically we're SMRing for ingredients for our yearly thanksgiving dinner. It will be held November 12th. It's nice to be able to cook things with your friends and it's a very nice experience.
- Murillo: how many people will this serve?
- 25 people
- Schultz: is this open to the whole campus?
- Yes
- VP Rudy: has this been advertised?
- Not yet but we will be eventually
- Rudy: how many people are in the club are going?
- We're guessing roughly 25.
- Goodell: have you considered making this an interest meeting for the club?
- It's an interesting way of advertising it, we'll think about it.
- Blea: I know that with the changes of club budgets-is this something you will put in your budgets from here on in?
- We actually did not have a budget based on a past year e-board member's failure to put in a club constitution.
- Finance Committee recommended the full amount
- Rudy: does this go against our whole rule against not funding food?
- Kendall: we fund 15 dollars per dinners and 8 dollars for lunch.
- Roods: motion to pass the full amount
- Fiteni: seconded
- Motion Passes
- Rudy: does this go against our whole rule against not funding food?
- SMR 2: Outdoor Club is asking for a wilderness first aid workshop in conjunction with SUCO. People need it for different activities around campus. Awakening leaders use it. You can also be recertified if you have the training. They're asking for the money to cover the course and $65 per student. Total: $2735.
- It can be used for a lot of different things. Three programs are directly benefiting from this first aid. This can be used to help recertify as well, we need leaders for the next few years. The challenge education strongly recommends this. We're opening it for SUCO and the community. It's a tradition that we've been doing for the last 5 or so years, usually switching off. It's been advertising so we're hoping to get a bunch of people and it always fills up.
- Blea: part of it is going towards running the course. What are the individual's costs?
- It's the cost for the student's to enroll and it goes towards the certification and manuals and some of the instructor costs. At Pine Lake we've already agreed to do many other fees which we haven't listed here. 500 dollars is already taken care of.
- Blea: so in reality that thousand-so dollars is a fraction of the total cost?
- Yes
- LoSardo: Has Senate funded this in the past?
- Yes.
- The money given per person is really good for people who are awakening leaders, who are not paid very much
- DesRoberts: there are 25 confirmed students who are doing this?
- The first 25 people who sign up will have this. If we have more they wont receive the benefit but there will be money generated back too because all non-Hartwick students are paying full price.
- Finance Committee Recommended 2110. It's the flip-flop of amount students pay with what we're paying.
- 65 dollars isn't unreasonable for this training, especially since it will benefit them for future jobs
- Kelsey: speaking as someone who is first aid certified, finding the course for 40 dollars is really awesome because they're so expensive. You're lucky to find one for 150 dollars or so. Having something like this is a really good thing and it will benefit all the programs.
- LoSardo: motion to pass amount recommended by the finance committee
- Fiteni: seconded
- Motion Passes
- SMR 3. Grassroots, asking to expand organic dinner $475
- Basically they're trying to up the people, they already have 130 people signed up and are expecting more. This "Aramark Crazy Charge" is because traditionally Aramark hasn't charged for preparation and resources they need to put this dinner on but no longer happens.
- Kendall: The reason why they charge the fee is because the more food there is, the more people they need to have work. He is trying to have this more fair because he doesn't have the resources to accommodate all clubs as such.
- Lillie: is the dollar per students used towards the dinner?
- The dollar is to make sure we weed out people who feel as if they paid for their dinner. We also have a big event in the spring.
- We will have 12 gallons of ice cream: Nancy's berry, coffee chip, cookie dough, and one other.
- Harrington: ice cream sounds like a good idea to celebrate Senate's 60 year anniversary.
- Finance Committee recommended Full Amount:
- Motion to give full amount
- Motion Seconded
- Motion Passes
- Gardner: I would like to have a volunteer to have serve on the Middle States committee
- Post: I volunteer
- Rudy: there is a constitution for "Colleges Against Cancer". I would like people to look over it.
- It brings American Cancer Societies programs to campuses nationwide. There is going to be a Relay for Life over at SUCO. Next year we will hopefully have a joint sponsorship of the event. Cancer touches all of us-I believe one in two women and one in three men will get cancer sometime in their lifetime. With medicine and discovery comes responsibility and its something that our generation should become a part of.
- Article 7 looks like Article 6 section one. Formatting Error, not content.
- Schultz: motion to pass the constitution
- Fiteni: seconded § Motion Passes
- Blea: last year I made a suggestion that we should research a way for professors to put general information on their books so that it offers competitiveness for other bookstores.
- Gardner: what tends to be the problem is that there are professors who put their own things together and I cannot search that by ISBN number. If you do have quasi-unique book or if it's a professor's own book. For other stuff, we can look into this
- Blea: the bookstore has a monopoly over this
- Schultz: because we have a contract with Barnes and Noble we do get a discount. Even used, we get a major discount from the bookstore. It is in most cases in our advantage to buy books from the bookstore.
- Blea: that may be true for science majors, but from my perspective that English books tend to be more expensive from the bookstore. I'd like to see more competitiveness.
- Lillie: my only issue is that my friend has paid for a book and they still have not given us the book. They weren't on top of what books I needed for each class.
- Rudy: is there anything we can do as far as the 250 charge that was tacked onto us-we don't have the ability to go out of Aramark. I'm irked that we not have to pay 250, especially since we are operating currently under low budgets.
- Gardner: I brought up the fact that clubs are forced to go under Aramark, and I brought up that clubs can't afford this. If a club approached Aramark and said "we have a small event and only want a pizza from Sals" they will usually say "okay". When we do large events, they have to be done with Aramark. That's when the 250 fee will be used. That will be good for the food services committee to talk about with Ric.
- Kendall: one of the reasons why we see this is because they increased the amount of food that they had. Also in the past, clubs would work with the food service members to cook and prepare. With the amount of people they need to hire that night 250 will not even cover that.
- LoSardo: why is there a contract with Aramark with student senate money and is there any way out of it?
- Gardner: Hartwick College has the contract with Aramark and as such all food vending goes through them. To be fair, Aramark does not make much with Hartwick because we are such a small school. If we worked with them we would get a significantly reduced cost for taste of Hartwick. They don't make much money off of us, but they still need to.
- LoSardo: we get food and stuff from wal mart and sals pizza.
- Gardner: technically you're supposed to go through Aramark.
- Kendall: If it's under 50 dollars you're allowed to go outside of Aramark.
- Rudy: it just doesn't seem that Senate should be suffering this cost and I feel that since Aramark fee is not included under the Student Activity Fee, why should the burden be increased.
- Riviello: the thing is "if you want to eat, eat in the commons-if you want to eat outside the commons we're going to charge you extra because we already prepared you food".
- Rudy: just the fact that the college chose this contract with the company and now we have to pay a service charge on top of anything else. We never used to get charged.
- Fiteni: I've seen other companies and how much they charge for food events-Aramark is one of the cheapest I've seen. At my other schools we bankrupted ourselves trying to get food for events. They will charge money for their "phone call labor" fee.
Announcements:
- Kendall: History Theses defense Nov 12 and 13 at 5:30-7:30 in Eaton Lounge.
- Goodell: perhaps senate could so something-grassroots has just distributed green boxes where you can recycle ink cartridges. It's our fundraiser.
