Many Career Paths

Hartwick makes sure you have the real-world experience you need to succeed after graduation. You’ll get into labs right away and work with some impressive equipment, including a High-Performance Liquid Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer, a Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer, an Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, a 300 MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer, and various optical spectrometers.

Add an education certification and you can teach the next generation of up-and-coming chemists, or a minor in forensic science or criminal justice to open up career paths in mortuary science, crime scene analysis or forensic anthropology.

In addition to your Faculty Mentor, you’ll also be paired with a Career Coach, who will help you hone your passions into internships in your chosen field – and help you find a career you’ll be passionate about.

EXTRAORDINARY OPPORTUNITIES

Hartwick will help you make the most of your time on campus, with clubs, J Term experiences and ample opportunities to learn from guest speakers, mini-seminars and conferences.

Make soap to sell with the Chemistry Club and raise money to sponsor travel to the American Chemistry Society or the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology National Meetings. Get into our Center for Craft Food & Beverage and study desirable compounds that make for high-quality spirits. You could even get a paid internship for your work there!

AN EDUCATION BUILT FOR YOU

Co-collaboration is at the heart of Hartwick’s Chemistry department. Take courses in environmental or biochemistry, or step outside the lab and enhance your creativity in a music ensemble, theater performance or volunteer organization.

J Term and fall/spring semester-long research projects allow you to work alongside faculty and focus on areas of chemistry that excite you. Your Alumni Mentor will share their personalized experience to empower and inspire you as you look for your first job, and your Success Coach will be there to cheer you the whole way through.

In your senior year, you’ll take on a funded independent research project alongside your Faculty Mentor. Present your findings at Student Showcase, or even at a national conference! It all goes on your Digital Resume, which shows employers you have the skills and drive to succeed in the workplace.

RESEARCH

Like Emily Jackson, ’22, who is working at Albany Medical School as a Laboratory Research Technician. While at Hartwick, she received The American Institute of Chemists student award, presented to a top graduating chemistry student who demonstrates advancement potential in the chemical professions.

EMPLOYMENT

Like Peyton Samuelson ’22, now working for Agilent Technologies, one of the top suppliers of technology for laboratories and diagnostics markets. Peyton was the recipient of the Undergraduate Award in Analytical Chemistry.

GRADUATE SCHOOL

Emilija Aleksandrovic ’20, now working on a Ph.D. at the University of Texas Southwestern, focusing on Cell and Molecular Biology. Emilija worked in the Center for Craft Food and Beverage as a lab technician, and helped other students as a chemistry tutor.
