MANY CAREER PATHS

Computer Science is more than just being a programmer. All offices, stores and businesses need professionals who know how to build, manage and develop systems to help them run their businesses effectively.

Put your creative vision and talents to work developing an educational game to help students adjust to college life, or focus on cybersecurity to protect consumers’ data from hackers and fraud.

Cross-collaborations with other departments gives you real-world work experience as you design systems to help with athletics, accounting, the library or the Yager Museum. Your Career Coach will help you navigate projects and internships, while your Alumni Mentor will share their career experiences with you.

EXTRAORDINARY OPPORTUNITIES

From the time you arrive at Hartwick, you’ll work in “The Clubhouse,” our Computer and Information Resource Center. It’s where you’ll develop your programming skills, build apps and teach machines to learn as you develop new and exciting AI skills. Many Computer Science students find it a quiet place to get away and just get some work done.

But The Clubhouse isn’t just for work. Join LAN gaming parties with the Computer Science club and win prizes donated by alumni. You may even see some Lego NXT-G robots driving by! As a room for just the Computer Science students, you can rest assured that there will always be something interesting going on.

Exciting topics courses allow the department to offer courses in the latest topic or technology that may not be part of the standard curriculum. Take a course in Blockchain and Bitcoin to deepen your understanding of this exciting and emerging technology, or add Computer Ethics class to solidify your foundation in using computer science to better the world. The topics change every year based on student interests.

AN EDUCATION BUILT FOR YOU

Hartwick’s Computer Science faculty know that in order to be up-to-date on the latest technology, they want to work alongside as peers as you develop your personal expertise together. The courses you complete as you move through the major allow you to find your fit in the industry you will eventually call home. Database? Programming? Computer Security? Systems Design? As you move through each of these, you will be building your toolbox of skills that will help you to succeed in your career.

In your Senior Year, you’ll work alongside your Faculty Mentor to develop your thesis project. This is your chance to deepen your understanding, then share what you’ve created at the Scholar Showcase. It’s the final piece of your Digital Resume, proof that you’ve got the skills employers want to see.

WHERE WILL A HARTWICK DEGREE TAKE YOU?

Employment

Like Thomas Vatter ’17, a Senior Development Engineer at Experian. At Hartwick, Thomas was honored with the department’s Award for Excellence in Computer and Information Science during Honors Convocation. For his senior thesis, Thomas built a vintage-style arcade cabinet, now on display in the Computer Science Clubhouse for all students to play.

Research

Like Farheen Fatima ’19, who is putting her Computer Sciences and Biology double-major into practice as a Vector Synthesis Research Associate II at Vertex Pharmaceuticals. A 2018 JCH Scholar who graduated Summa Cum Laude with Departmental and College Honors, Farheen was also VP of the Computer Science Club and the Student Senate, as well as the President of National Society of Leadership and Success Hartwick Chapter.

Graduate School

Like Azimkhon Sultankhodjaev ’22, who is continuing his studies in cloud computing at the University of Texas at Austin. He completed two internships while at Hartwick; as a Project Manager at Laundris Corporation and as a Machine Learning engineer at Asterion AI. His senior thesis was in the research of AI and drone technology. Working to give the drone the ability to recognize the human face and follow it. The end result was amazing and he laid the foundation for his current work in graduate school.
