Field Study

Lock Haven, Pennsylvania 1998
Our Aqueous Geochemistry class studied acid mine drainage in the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania. The class visited hazardous waste sites as well as remediation sites and an abandoned mine in Shamokin, Pennsylvania. Three stops on the trip were visits to Acid Mine Drainage creeks and their remediation sites at Babb, Lick, and Tangascootack Creeks. The class recorded observations of these three streams, sampled the water to test for harmful chemicals, and observed treatments for the contaminated waters. All of our hard work out in the field as well as in the lab, can be found on our web page, www.hartwick.edu/Geology/Geochem/fieldtripmain.html.

  Shamokin, Pennsylvania 1997
Our Field Geology class traveled to Shamokin, Pennsylvania to study the structural geology of the abandoned mine, located in the Appalachain Mountains. The class studied the historical geology of the region as well as the structural features of the anticlines and synclines, which are left behind as a result of the coal mining that took place there.

Catskill, New York 1997
Our Field Geology class traveled to Catskill, New York to study the structural geology of the area. The class carefully observed a road-side outcrop that depicts the folding, faulting, and deformation of the rocks that took place during the Acadian Orogeny, a mountain building event.

New York, Vermont, Massachusetts field trip weekend 1997
Our Field Geology class began in New York State and continued into Vermont and Massachusetts for a complete field geology weekend. The Green Mountains that begin in New York and continue into Vermont were the focus of the trip. In Massachusetts, the mountains were continued into the Berkshire Mountains. Also of great interest, were the dinosaur footprints in Holyoke, MA.

Salt Lake City, Utah 1997
Our group of geology majors traveled out to Salt Lake City, Utah in order to attend the annual Geological Society of America meeting. A day long field study of the Uinta Mountains to the east of the city took place during our stay. Also, our group visited a copper mine, which is still active today.

Grand Canyon, Arizona and Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii 1997
Our Geology class took a trip abroad to the Grand Canyon, Arizona and the islands of Hawaii for the month of January, 1997. This course included the study of sedimentary rocks of the Grand Canyon, and then a comprehensive study of volcanic rocks on the three islands of Hawaii, Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii. The emphasis of the course was to collect and interpret geologic data in the field and to use this data to write the geologic history and geologic reports for several selected areas.
