‘Empty Bowls’ Event to Benefit Area Hungry

November 30, 2010

In an effort to help eradicate hunger in the Oneonta area, students and faculty from two very different Hartwick College disciplines have teamed up to host Empty Bowls. The event will be held from 5:30-7:3 p.m. on December 2, 2010 in Stack Lounge, Dewar Union on the Hartwick College campus.

More than 200 bowls have been crafted in the Hartwick College Ceramics Department this fall. Students in Assistant Professor of Art Stephanie Rozene's class made many of them, and they held three "Bowl-o-rama nights," during which those from across the campus community came to assist in creating the bowls.

Organizers have secured donations of soup from six local restaurants (The Autumn Cafe, Joe Ruffino's, Italian Kitchen, Fiesta Mexican Grill, Undercover Eggplant, and Stella Luna Ristorante), bread donations from Hannaford, Annuto's donated cider donuts, and Aramark Facilities Services donated bread. The Hartwick College President's Office has donated cookies for dessert.

For $15 per ticket, attendees choose a bowl to keep, fill that bowl with local soup, and sit and enjoy their meal (including musical entertainment by student pianist Emily Gage) while benefitting the hungry in our community. Students from Associate Professor of Economics Kristen Jones' First Year Seminar, The Economics of Poverty, have created posters for the event to help attendees learn more about the grim reality of poverty in the region.

All the proceeds from the event will go to Opportunities for Otsego's Hunger Campaign. Any remaining soup will be donated to The Lord's Kitchen.

"We're trying to start small and make this an annual event," Rozene explained. "It's a way for the students to give back to the community and raise awareness about hunger and poverty. This is a valuable experience for our students, too, because it involves experiential and service learning, and it's helping to support members of their community who are in need.

"We're hoping that this can become an annual event that we can hold every fall and give back to an organization in the community every year," she said.

Empty Bowls is "a grassroots effort to raise money and awareness in an effort to end hunger and food insecurity. Each group that participates in the Empty Bowls project works with their community to create their own event."
