Hartwick Commencement Events to be Held May 22-23

May 18, 2009

Hartwick College will honor the Class of 2009 during a weekend of events May 22-23, celebrating the graduates’ accomplishments throughout their academic careers. This year’s Commencement ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday under a gala tent on Elmore Field, overlooking the city of Oneonta.

“This is a memorable moment for our graduating seniors,” Commencement Coordinator Karyl Clemens said. “The Hartwick community is proud of the accomplishments of the Class of 2009, and Commencement Weekend is a celebration of all they have achieved during their time with us. We look forward to joining families and friends in celebrating these students.”

Seniors Sandra Armakovitch, Benjamin Crosby, Nick Forst, and Samuel Roods have been chosen to speak at Baccalaureate, the weekend’s opening event, at 5:30 p.m., Friday, May 22, at the First United Methodist Church on the corner of Church and Chestnut streets in Oneonta. They will join Professor of Business Administration John Clemens, who will offer parting words of wisdom to graduates.

Armakovitch, a Biology major; Crosby, a History major; Forst, a Philosophy and Political Science major; and Roods, a Political Science major, will reflect on their time at Hartwick College and wish their peers well in their futures. Tickets are required for Baccalaureate.

Baccalaureate will be followed by 1 to Go, a celebration of the countdown to Commencement for soon-to-be graduates, their families, faculty, and staff, at 8:30 p.m. Friday under a tent on Frisbee Field. The event is sponsored by the Hartwick College Alumni Association.

On Saturday, Cyrus Mehri ’83, founding partner of the law firm Mehri & Skalet, PLLC, will deliver this year’s Commencement address to graduates, their families, friends, and the Hartwick community. Mehri, founder of Hartwick’s Cyrus Mehri Global Pluralism Award, serves as co-lead counsel in numerous consumer and civil rights class-action lawsuits, and has served as class counsel in some of the largest race and discrimination class-action lawsuits in U.S. history. He has authored numerous articles, papers, and reports, and was twice named a finalist by Trial Lawyers for Public Justice as Trial Lawyer of the Year.

Those unable to attend Commencement will be able to view the ceremony live via Webcast. Access to the Webcast and Windows Media Player can be found on the Webcast site.
