Hartwick Commencement Events Planned for May 23-25

Next Saturday, May 25, Hartwick College will celebrate the Class of 2013 during the College's 82nd Commencement exercises. Faculty, staff, family, and friends will gather at 11:30 a.m. on Elmore Field to recognize graduates' achievements throughout their time spent at Hartwick College.

"The Hartwick community looks forward to celebrating the Class of 2013 and their many achievements," Commencement Co-coordinator and Director of Social Issues and Wellness Education Taralyn Loewenguth said. "As the pinnacle event of our students' undergraduate careers, I am honored to be a part of what will be a wonderful experience for our graduates and their guests."

"Commencement weekend is a truly memorable moment for our graduating seniors, their families, and friends," added Commencement Co-coordinator and Registrar and Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs Matt Sanford. "We are all proud of the graduates' many accomplishments and look forward to sharing this special occasion with them."

The weekend-long celebration will begin with the President's Farewell Dinner with the senior class on Thursday, followed by the Senior Art Exhibition Reception and Nurses Pinning Ceremony on Friday afternoon. The Class of 2013 will convene at 5 p.m. Friday, May 24, for this year's Baccalaureate ceremony at the Foothills Performing Arts & Civic Center, 24 Market St. in Oneonta. A Hartwick tradition, student speakers Haley Cox '13, John Stuligross '13, Ilona van der Ven '13, and Anne Louise Wagner '13 will reflect on their time at Hartwick, and will join Professor of Art History Dr. Elizabeth Ayer, who will offer parting words of wisdom to the soon-to-be graduates. Tickets are not required for Baccalaureate.

Following Baccalaureate, graduates and their families are invited to celebrate the countdown to Commencement during "1 To Go," sponsored by the Hartwick College Alumni Association. The gathering, which will last from 8:30-11:30 p.m., will honor the Class of 2013 with desserts and other finger foods, a cash bar, and dancing in Lambros Arena, Binder Physical Education Center.

On Saturday, May 25, this year's 303 degree candidates will undertake the transition from Hartwick student to Hartwick alum during Commencement ceremonies.

During the ceremony, pioneer in the field of mind-body medicine Deepak Chopra M.D. will address graduates, their families, and friends as Hartwick's 2013 Commencement speaker. Chopra is the Founder and Chairman of the Chopra Foundation, and Founder and Chairman of the Chopra Center for Wellbeing in Carlsbad, California. He is known as a prolific author of nearly 64 books, including 18 New York Times bestsellers on mind-body health, spirituality, and peace. A global force in the field of human empowerment, Chopra's books have been published in more than 80 languages in both fiction and non-fiction. His New York Times bestsellers, "Peace Is the Way" received the Religion and Spirituality Quill Award in 2005, and "The Book of Secrets: Unlocking the Hidden Dimensions of Your Life" was awarded the Grand Prize in the 2005 Nautilus Awards. His latest New York Times bestsellers include: "War of the Worldviews", "Reinventing the Body, Resurrecting the Soul", and "Spiritual Solutions - Answers To Life's Greatest Problems". In response to public recognition and interest in this year's Commencement speaker, and to accommodate the increasing number of those who wish to attend Hartwick's 2013 Commencement Exercises, this year's Ceremony will be limited to graduating seniors and ticket-bearing guests. Guests and family members who are not able to be here to celebrate with students can view the Commencement Ceremony via a live Webcast beginning at 11:30 a.m. the day of the event.
