May 10, 2012

Hartwick College will celebrate the Class of 2012 on May 26 during the College's 81st Commencement exercises. Faculty, staff, family, and friends will gather at 11:30 a.m. under a gala tent on Elmore Field to recognize graduates' achievements throughout their academic careers.

"The Hartwick community looks forward to celebrating the Class of 2012 and their many achievements," Commencement Co-coordinator and Director of Social Issues and Wellness Education Taralyn Loewenguth said.

"Commencement weekend is a memorable moment for our graduating seniors, their families, and their friends. We are all proud of their many accomplishments." Commencement Co-coordinator and Registrar and Director of the Office of Advising and Registration Matt Sanford echoed that sentiment.

The weekend-long celebration will begin with the President's Farewell Dinner with the senior class on Thursday, followed by the Senior Art Exhibition Reception and Nurses Pinning Ceremony on Friday afternoon. The Class of 2012 will convene at 5 p.m. Friday, May 25, for this year's Baccalaureate ceremony at the Foothills Performing Arts & Civic Center, 24 Market St. in Oneonta. A Hartwick tradition, student speakers Mark Blazek '12, Jaimie DeJager '12, Katherine Derby '12, and Hannah Kennedy '12 will reflect on their time at Hartwick, and will join Associate Professor of Chemistry John Dudek, who will offer parting words of wisdom to graduates. Tickets are not required for Baccalaureate.

Following Baccalaureate, graduates and their families are invited to celebrate the countdown to Commencement during 1 To Go, sponsored by the Hartwick College Alumni Association. The gathering will honor the Class of 2012 from 8:30-11:30 p.m. with desserts and other finger foods, a cash bar, and dancing in Stack Lounge, Dewar Union.

On Saturday, May 26, this year's 312 graduation participants will undertake the transition from Hartwick student to Hartwick alumni during Commencement ceremonies.

Dr. Kathy Ordoñez '72 H'00 will address graduates, their families, and friends as Hartwick's 2012 Commencement speaker. Ordoñez is Senior Vice President for Discovery and Development at Quest Diagnostics and President of Celera. At Quest Diagnostics, the world's leading provider of diagnostic testing, information and services, she manages the innovation pipeline and reducing cycle-time to introduce new tests and technologies.
