Hartwick Featured in Fiske Guide to Colleges 2015

July 17, 2014

Hartwick College is featured in the 2015 edition of the Fiske Guide to Colleges. The highly selective guide includes more than 300 colleges and universities selected for their strength in a broad range of subjects such as academics, social life, financial aid, campus setting, housing, extracurricular activities, and more.

Compiled by former New York Times education editor Edward B. Fiske, the Guide takes into account many qualities when selecting schools, including academic ratings and quality of student life on campus. Hartwick College has appeared in the Guide regularly in recent years.

"The Fiske Guide is one of the most trusted and well-respected college guides for parents and college-bound students," said Susan Salton, Director of Marketing and Communications. "To be once again included in the prestigious guide is a testament to the value of a Hartwick education - which is defined by the ways Hartwick College supports personal and intellectual growth as a reflection of the quality of learning."

Fiske notes that Hartwick College "emphasizes study abroad," "crystallizing the school's philosophy that learning isn't about rote memorization, it's about creating experiential knowledge and developing skills." Fiske also cites Hartwick's "emphasis on learning through real-world experiences, from working in a Jamaican hospital to interning with the New York Mets," and notes that "student/faculty collaborations are the norm." Other Hartwick staples such as the Three-Year Degree Program and the Awakening Program are also discussed within this year's Guide as key benefits offered at Hartwick.

Among the comments about Hartwick featured in the Fiske Guide are:

  • "Hartwick College is characterized by its strong liberal arts curriculum and its close community ties."
  • "The courses are challenging but the professors and students make [Hartwick] fun and exciting."
  • "Hartwick is known for its cozy atmosphere and ability to take good care of students."

The Fiske Guide takes a systematic look at colleges and universities in the U.S., Canada and Great Britain and aims to give readers an insider's view of the institutions based on a wide range of subjects. Research, accompanied by testimonials from students, gives helpful and honest information about academic climates and courses.

For more than 30 years, the Guide has been an essential source of information for college-bound students, parents and guidance counselors when researching higher education institutions.
