A message from Hartwick President Margaret L. Drugovich on the earthquake and tsunami in Japan

March 16, 2011

On behalf of the Hartwick College community, I extend my deepest sympathies and most sincere expression of concern to all of those in Japan who are suffering as a result of the devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami. We stand with you in support, grieve for your loss, and admire your courage as you recover and rebuild your lives and your country.

Through our alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends, Hartwick has many connections to Japan. One of our current students was flying to Japan on the morning of the earthquake to train with the Philippines national soccer team. After diversion from Tokyo to Osaka, he safely made it to his destination in Mongolia.

Hartwick is a caring and compassionate community and I know its members will extend their support to the recovery efforts in any way that they are able. I urge each member of our community to allow your humanity to guide you to support the many fine international relief organizations already on the ground in Japan. I know as you do that a tragedy like this brings out the best of our sensibilities and will urge us on to sustain those who most need our help.

This global tragedy is now a part of our shared experience, and the dignity and strength of the Japanese people are an inspiration to us all.
