Hartwick Basketball Teams to Compete in NCAA TournamentMarch 4, 2014
Both of Hartwick's basketball teams will compete in their respective NCAA Tournaments beginning Friday, March 7.
After winning the Empire 8 Championship game this past Saturday, the Hartwick men will travel to Purchase for an 8 p.m. game against the host Panthers. The Hartwick women received an at-large bid and will host a pair of first round games Friday with the two winners meeting Saturday.
The Hartwick men's basketball team will face the SUNY Purchase Panthers on Friday night in Purchase, NY. Joining 'Wick and Purchase in the four-team pod will be Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Albertus Magnus.
Hartwick earned a spot in the 62-team field for the 18th time in program history. This is its third appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the last four years after earning the automatic bid by virtue of winning the Empire 8 Championship game on Saturday against Nazareth, 67-62.
Hartwick has a history with its opponent. The Hawks and Panthers last played on November 16, 2012 at the Regis Tip-Off Tournament where Purchase won 84-77. 'Wick and Purchase have met once before in the NCAA Tournament back on March 4, 2011. The two teams played on the campus of Cabrini College with the Panthers winning over the Hawks, 79-69.
Hartwick's women's basketball team not only was rewarded for its stellar season on Monday afternoon with an at-large berth into the 2014 NCAA Division III Basketball Tournament, but 'Wick will serve as a host institution for the opening two rounds.
The Hawks, who will be making their ninth appearance in the tournament, will play on Friday, March 7 against Baruch College (21-7). Amherst College (24-3) and Springfield College (17-11) will also play Friday. All three games will be played at Lambros Arena.
"This is always the best time of the year," said Hartwick head coach Missy West. "I am thrilled to be part of the NCAA tournament again and even further to be hosting it. After our hiccup in the Empire 8 Tournament, this gives us new life and new energy. I'm looking forward to some great games and a great tournament."
The Hawks are 21-5 overall this season. Hartwick's 21 wins is tied for the fifth-most in a single season in program history. 'Wick is three wins shy of the College all-time benchmark.
After receiving their first NCAA invite in 1983, Hartwick participated in six national tournaments in the 1990s (1990, '91, '95, '96, '97, '99). Their last appearance was in 2012 when the Hawks lost in the opening round to Emmanuel College (MA) 68-61. The last time the Hawks hosted a tournament game was in 1997. 'Wick last won an NCAA Tournament game in 1991.
