Hartwick Men’s Basketball Ranked 1st in East Region; Women’s Team Ranked 3rdFebruary 10, 2012
For the first time this season, the NCAA has released its regional rankings for men's and women's basketball. The Hartwick men's basketball team is the top-ranked team in the East Region. The Hartwick women's team is ranked 3rd.
The rankings are used in the selection of at-large bids to the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Tournaments. They will now be released each week until the tournament fields are announced on February 27.
The Hartwick men's team ranks ahead of Oswego (17-3), NYU (17-2), Hobart (16-4), Medaille (20-2), and Nazareth (15-7). It is the first regional ranking for the program since the 1995-96 season, when Hartwick was also #1.
The defending Empire 8 champion Hawks are 20-2 overall and tied for first in the Empire 8 with Stevens at 9-2 in the conference. Hartwick, which clinched a berth in the Empire 8 playoffs last weekend, has reached the 20-win mark for the first time in 20 years (1991-92).
The Hartwick women's team is ranked behind only top-ranked Rochester (17-3) and Ithaca (18-4) in the region. St. Lawrence (17-4) ranks 4th, Oneonta State (14-6) is 5th, and Buffalo State (18-2) is 6th. The Hawks have three wins against the rest of the region with victories over Ithaca, St. Lawrence, and Oneonta State this season.
'Wick, which boasts an overall record of 19-3 and a 10-1 mark in the Empire 8 Conference, registered its 10th straight victory last night at Albany College of Pharmacy. The Hawks' 10 consecutive wins marks the third-longest win streak in program history.
Hartwick has reached the 19-win total for the first time since 1996-97. The Hawks are tied for first in the conference and have secured their first Empire 8 playoff appearance since 2004-05.
Both Hartwick teams hit the road this weekend for Empire 8 Conference games. The women play at Nazareth tonight at 6 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 8 p.m. On Saturday, both teams play at St. John Fisher at 2 and 4 p.m., respectively.
