Hartwick Hires Coaches for Women’s Basketball, SoccerJuly 8, 2014
Hartwick College Director of Athletics Dr. Kim Fierke has announced that Jackie Craft has been named Head Women's Basketball Coach and Brian Gordon has been name Head Coach for Hartwick Women's Soccer. They succeed Missy West and Matt Verni, respectively.
Craft has served as Head Women's Basketball Coach at The Sage Colleges in Troy, NY for the last nine years. This past season, she led the Gators to a conference tournament title and the national tournament.
"We are so excited to have Jackie as the leader of our women's basketball team," said Fierke. "She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our already competitive program and her enthusiasm and passion will position this team for success in the future."
Craft piloted Sage to a record-breaking season in 2013-14. She led the Gators to a school record 17 victories, the program's first Skyline Conference Championship, and its first NCAA Tournament appearance. Craft was the youngest Division III head coach in men's or women's basketball in 2005 when she began her tenure at Sage. She leaves as the all-time winningest coach in Sage history. Since 2012, Craft has also served as the Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator.
In 2011, she received the prestigious National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) Judith M. Sweet Commitment award, which recognizes an athletics administrator who is committed to providing high-level leadership and guidance within intercollegiate athletics, goes beyond the call of duty, and provides outstanding service to their department, conference office, or organization.
"Our goal will be to build on the tremendous success the program has had in the past," Craft stated, "while creating and maintaining a culture that student-athletes can reach their full potential both on and off the floor."
In two years as an assistant coach, Gordon has helped Hartwick Women's Soccer to consecutive postseason appearances after a nine-year drought. He becomes just the eighth head coach in the program's 34-year history.
"Brian clearly emerged as the top candidate in our national search," said Fierke. His enthusiasm and desire to lead Hartwick women's soccer will propel this team forward in the competitive Empire 8 Conference. He will be a great addition to the College."
In his first season with the Hartwick Women's Soccer team in 2012, Gordon helped the Hawks to an 8-8-2 record and a spot in the ECAC Tournament. The Hawks followed it up last year with an 8-8-3 mark and a repeat berth in the ECAC's. The two seasons marked the first back-to-back .500 or better seasons since the 1995 and 1996 campaigns.
Gordon is a former member of the Hartwick Men's Soccer Team. The Erskine, Scotland native played for 'Wick from 2008-2009. He was named to the 2009 Mayor's Cup All-Tournament Team. From 2006-2008, Gordon was a member of the University of Albany's Men's Soccer Team. In 2006 he was named to the America East All-Tournament Team and Rookie Team. He also played for East Stirlingshire Football Club from 2005-06 and Renfrew FC from 2010-2012.
"I'm excited to add to the growth of our improving program and will look for us to compete and hopefully achieve a playoff spot in the Empire 8 this coming fall," added Gordon. "I look forward to testing ourselves against some very good teams in our non-conference schedule and I believe that it will set us up well for conference play."
