Hartwick Theatre Arts Presents “Once On This Island”

Hartwick’s Department of English and Theatre Arts will present the musical Once On This Island from April 16 through the 25 in Slade Theatre, Yager Hall, on the Hartwick College campus.

The play will be performed six times. April 16, 17, 22, and 23 at 8 p.m. and the 18th and 25th at 2 p.m. There is no performance on April 24. Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 for students, senior citizens, and Hartwick College faculty and staff.

Once On This Island, book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty, tells the story of Ti Moune, a poor peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with the wealthy Daniel Beauxhomme. Her love will send Ti Moune on a journey that will test the strength of love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death. This highly theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale The Little Mermaid garnered eight Tony nominations for its Broadway run, including Best Musical, Book and Score.

Oneonta 1st grader Eva Barberio will join the cast of Hartwick College students and alumni: Kristy Allen ’12, Molly Bolton ’10, Breanna Bradley ’13, Emmanuella Brakye ’11, Reggie Brown ’10, Sean Carpenter ’13, Blair Coppola ’11, Luckens Damus ’11, Joey Haws ’09, Kristyn Knapp ’12, Isaac Ofori ’13, Monica Anne Peterson ’10, Salina Polanco ’13, Andrea Quinlan ’13, and Kate Wigg ’11.

Once On This Island is directed by Malissa A. Kano-White, Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts, vocal direction by Instructor in Music Johana Arnold, musical direction by Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Jason Leo Curley, and stage managed by Caitlin Strunk10. Professor of Theatre Arts Kenneth Golden is the play's scenic designer, Tim Huey ’10 designed the lights, Haws served as costume designer, Media Services Assistant Samantha Green served as sound designer. Instructor in Technical Theatre Gary Burlew is technical director, and Julie Cassese Valentin designed the props.
