Hartwick College Co-Sponsors Main Street Oneonta Mural ProjectApril 27, 2010
Hartwick College has joined the growing list of community organizations in support of the Main Street Oneonta Mural Project.
Designed by Oneonta artist Cynthia Marsh, the mural will be located on the east side of the "Clinton Plaza A building." This project provides a unique opportunity to create an artistic focal point for the intersection of Chestnut and Main streets. The design of the mural will be unveiled May 7.
"Hartwick College is proud to support this project," said Dr. Margaret L. Drugovich, College President. "The collaborative nature of this project, with its focus on the beautification of downtown Oneonta, demonstrates the value of collective action in creating a common good. These are principles that we share with our students, and they are principles at the heart of Hartwick's own mission."
The mural depicts the native people of the region--the Iroquois--as they were in the 1750s. It highlights the majestic beauty of the upper Susquehanna Valley and the indigenous birds that could be found there.
In designing the mural, Marsh is consulting with the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society, the Iroquois Indian Museum, and SUNY Oneonta Professor Emeritus of Anthropology William Starna.
"This has been one of the most fascinating commissions I've had the opportunity to work on," Marsh said. "I greatly appreciate the donation of time, talent, expertise, and funds that numerous organizations and individuals have given toward this project."
In addition to Hartwick College and the aforementioned organizations, other supporters and contributors to the project to date are: The New York State Council on the Arts, The Upper Catskill Community Council of the Arts Decentralization Program, Oneonta Mural Project, Cooperstown/Otsego County Tourism, Westbury Property Management Group LLC, The Daily Star, NBT Bank, Future for Oneonta Foundation, Main Street Oneonta, Golden Artist Colors, photographer Brit Worgan, and pilot Rob Craigmyle.
