Biotech Leader to Deliver Hartwick College 2012 Commencement AddressMay 14, 2012
Hartwick College's 2012 Commencement speaker will be biotechnology executive Kathy Ordoñez. A 1972 Hartwick graduate, Ordoñez is Senior Vice President for Discovery and Development at Quest Diagnostics and President of Celera. She will address the Class of 2012, their families, and the Hartwick community on Saturday, May 26 in a ceremony beginning at 11:30 a.m. on the College's Elmore Field.
"Dr. Ordoñez has been on the front lines of biotechnology for almost 30 years. She is an outstanding example of what Hartwick graduates accomplish when building a career upon the foundation of a strong liberal arts education," said Hartwick College President Dr. Margaret L. Drugovich. "She has successfully combined her strengths as a businesswoman with her passion for scientific discovery and application. She has reached the pinnacle of a highly competitive, complex, and emerging scientific field that is improving the health and well-being of millions of people around the world."
Ordoñez holds a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Hartwick and was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Sciences from the College in 2000. At Quest Diagnostics, the world's leading provider of diagnostic testing, information and services, she manages the innovation pipeline and reducing cycle-time to introduce new tests and technologies. For Celera, a company that is synonymous with sequencing the human genome, Ordoñez drives the firm's focus on personalizing disease management through diagnostic products and services, including Berkeley HeartLab.
Ordoñez joined Quest Diagnostics with its acquisition of Celera in May 2011. She served as Chief Executive Officer of Celera and was a founder of Celera Diagnostics. Prior to joining Celera's parent company, Applera, in 2000, Ordoñez held a number of senior positions over 15 years with Hoffmann-La Roche. She oversaw the formation of Roche Molecular Systems as its President and Chief Executive Officer, and led the application of polymerase chain reaction technology to the diagnostic, research, and forensic fields. Before joining Roche, Ordoñez held several marketing and scientific positions in Baker Instruments, a division of Richardson-Vicks, and Union Carbide Corporation.
