Hartwick’s Pine Lake to Hold 40th Anniversary Reunion

June 22, 2011

To mark the 40th anniversary of its becoming an integral part of Hartwick College, Pine Lake Environmental Campus will hold public reunion events on July 9, 2011 at the site, 1894 Charlotte Creek Road, West Davenport.

"The history of Pine Lake as part of Hartwick College is really a tribute to the foresight, vision, and leadership of many campus and community members," said Brian Hagenbuch, Director of the Pine Lake Institute for Environmental and Sustainability Studies. "Pine Lake was purchased at the dawn of the modern environmental movement, so Hartwick was well-positioned to provide educational leadership in ecological scholarship and stewardship. Over the past 40 years, that philosophy and commitment has evolved to the point where Pine Lake has become a year-round laboratory for sustainable living and learning for members of the Hartwick and the upstate New York communities."

Pine Lake 40th Anniversary Reunion events are free and open to the public with registration. For more information, or to register, visit www.hartwick.edu/pinelake.

A conversation with Hartwick College President Dr. Margaret L. Drugovich will be held at 10 a.m., with the dedication of the Charley Brooks Stage to follow at 11 p.m. Other scheduled events include Challenge Education field games, an evening contra dance, Pine Lake tours, and Brooks' BBQ Dinner.

"Pine Lake has always had a strong public presence in the region. I've talked to a lot of community members who speak fondly of their experiences swimming, fishing, or hiking at Pine Lake," Hagenbuch said. "I'd like to invite them back and become friends, explore the forests, take a dip, paddle a canoe, enjoy a picnic, rent a cabin, share stories, rekindle their connection to nature, and learn about the important work we're doing on local and regional sustainability education.

"We're very excited about the prospects for Pine Lake as a living and learning center for environmental sustainability and we look forward to working with students, faculty, and community members in these efforts."
