Honors Convocation Tradition Continues at Hartwick CollegeMay 8, 2014
Hartwick College honored more than 150 students and faculty members yesterday evening during the College's annual Honors Convocation ceremony in Lambros Arena, Binder Physical Education Center. President Margaret L. Drugovich and members of the Hartwick College community gathered to honor and congratulate the recipients of awards granted by academic departments and programs, as well as by several staff departments.
Each year, Honors Convocation at Hartwick College is held to recognize exceptional academic achievement; a celebration of excellence in scholarship. Drugovich opened this year's event by welcoming the faculty, staff, students, and families gathered to honor the 2014 recipients, who took home awards for academic and scholarly contributions made to the College during the 2013-14 academic year.
"Tonight, we gather to celebrate the significant scholarly achievements of Hartwick College students," she said. "Each student who we honor has distinguished themselves in the eyes of their professors and their mentors, not as ordinary, but extraordinary. Tonight, we come together to praise and celebrate achievement."
Thirty students were named as recipients of Andrew B. Saxton Undergraduate Fellowships, 34 were listed as Faculty Scholars, 32 students were inducted into the Hartwick College Honor Society, and 34 were recognized for successful completion of the Hartwick College Honors Program.
Among those honored during the evening were six John Christopher Hartwick Scholars, announced by Dr. Michael Tannenbaum, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. These students join 309 previous John Christopher Hartwick Scholars as the 47th class of JCH inductees.
This distinction -- the highest honor the College can confer upon a student -- is based on academic achievement, leadership, and character. The JCH Scholars for 2014-15 are:

The Winifred D. Wandersee Scholar-In-Residence Award was given to Assistant Professor of Education Dr. Blake Tenore and Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts Malissa Kano-White. This award is given in memory of Professor of History and Faculty Chair Dr. Win Wandersee, who cared deeply about both her students and her scholarship and who enjoyed a national reputation as a historian of women in the work force.
The esteemed Margaret Brigham Bunn Award was given to Professor of Accounting, Penny Wightman, CPA. For many years, Bunn was a loyal friend of Hartwick who understood the centrality of the interaction between teacher and student. She served as a Trustee of the College for 14 years. When she died in 1978, her colleagues on the Board established this award, which is presented annually to a member of the faculty judged by students who graduated five years earlier to have been the most outstanding faculty member with whom they studied.
The prestigious Teacher-Scholar Award was presented to Professor of Philosophy Dr. Stefanie Rocknak. The award recognizes the tradition of the teacher-scholar "who enhances teaching through scholarship, research, or creative work, integrating the perspective of seeker and teacher, and demonstrates to students and colleagues the value and excitement of scholarly inquiry."
In closing the ceremony, Drugovich spoke of the students' achievements thus far, and of their many more yet to take place.
"If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves," Drugovich told the students, quoting the late inventor and businessman Thomas Alva Edison. "We know that your best work is yet to come. Congratulations to all of tonight's honorees."
