U.S. News & World Report Names Hartwick a First-Tier, Best Liberal Arts College

September 10, 2013

U.S. News & World Report has once again ranked Hartwick College among the first-tier of Best National Liberal Arts Colleges in the 2014 edition of its "Best Colleges" guide. Hartwick is ranked 161 among liberal arts colleges overall, up three spots from the 2013 edition.

"This first-tier ranking once again recognizes Hartwick's dedication to our students," said Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing David Conway. "Being honored year after year as a Best National Liberal Arts College reflects our continuing commitment to a liberal arts-based education that provides our students with experiential learning opportunities and the real-world experiences they need to be successful -- not just in their first jobs, but throughout their professional lives."

This year, U.S. News & World Report collected data on nearly 1,800 schools. The U.S. News rankings annually rate colleges and universities on a variety of up to 16 factors that indicate a school's academic excellence. These factors, which are based on several key measures of quality, include but are not limited to: graduation and retention rates, assessment by peers and counselors, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation rate performance, and alumni giving.

According to U.S. News, the country's 248 liberal arts colleges emphasize undergraduate education and award at least half of their degrees in the arts and sciences, which include such disciplines as English, the biological and physical sciences, history, foreign languages and the visual and performing arts but exclude professional disciplines such as business, education and nursing. There are 220 private and 27 public liberal arts colleges; one is for-profit.

In addition to its overall ranking, Hartwick is also named to supplementary lists by U.S. News this year. Among others, these include:

A fixture in higher education since its debut in 1983, the annual list from U.S. News is one of the nation's most trusted rankings of colleges and universities that award undergraduate degrees. For a full list of this year's college rankings, visit the U.S. News website at
