Failure: The Ultimate Learning Experience?
Seeing your child struggle or fail at something is difficult for any parent and the instinct to try to solve their problems is natural. Keep in mind, however, that sometimes the best learning experiences occur through challenges! Sometimes it takes a measure of failure before a student is ready to reach out for the help and support he or she needs.
Learning to identify needs, and understanding that s/he needs to seek out resources, is an important skill - it is the key to success! You may prevent your child from developing important self-advocacy skills if you help shield him or her from challenges or failure. This is especially true when s/he needs to understand the consequences of poor choices or the lack of acting on his or her own behalf.
