Tim Canty ’94 was selected as this year’s Outstanding Young Alumnus. His Physics major at Hartwick led to a master's and a Ph.D. in physics from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, where he excelled in all facets of graduate student life. He is a research scientist at the University of Maryland, where he studies the impact of climate change on atmospheric composition. He uses satellite, balloon-borne, and ground-based instrumentation to conduct the research, and his results have been published to support national-policy discussions and decisions on issues such as ozone depletion and global climate change. Tim credits his liberal arts and sciences education at Hartwick and the leadership skills he developed as captain of the Hawks swim team as the foundations of his success.
