We’ve designed our curriculum and teaching approaches to break down the barriers that separate the classroom from the world. As a Hartwick student, you’ll get to learn “out there” and bring that experience back, making your time in the classroom more engaging and effective.

The Opportunity to Study Abroad & Off Campus. You’ll have the opportunity to study off campus during J Term or study abroad for a semester or even a year. Some students participate in J Term off-campus programs even in their first year! More than 60% of Hartwick students participate in off-campus programs. Hartwick faculty lead J Term programs all over the country and the world to allow students to study subjects in their real life contexts. U.S. News & World Report (2007) ranked Hartwick in the top 10 nationwide for the percentage of students who study abroad.

Internships and Job Shadowing—the Chance to Study and Explore in Real Terms. We’ll help you make the connections between academic theories and real world realities. Each year more than 200 Hartwick students participate in internships—earning academic credit, acquiring hands-on experience, gauging interest in potential career paths. MetroLink, an award-winning program run by Hartwick’s Career Services Office, gives you the opportunity to shadow professionals in New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC.

Expansive Curriculum. Grounded in a foundation of the liberal arts, the Hartwick curriculum offers you a wide array of choices with 31 majors leading to a bachelor of arts (B.A.) or bachelor of science (B.S.) degree; four pre-professional programs; five cooperative programs; and a series of interesting minors and other options, including certification in education. You also may decide to design your own major. Hartwick offers a Three-Year Bachelor’s Degree Program. It’s the full Hartwick experience in three-quarters the time and at three-quarters the cost.

Pine Lake Environmental Campus.  Hartwick’s natural classroom of woodlands, wetlands, and a lake provides students with countless opportunities to explore ecosystems and the challenges of creating a sustainable future. It’s just one more example of how Hartwick helps you connect the dots between what’s going on “out there” and classroom study, so you’ll be well prepared to contribute to the world of the future.

January Term. For one month every year, Hartwick students pursue interesting lines of thought and challenging activities with a focus not always possible during fall and spring terms. J Term allows students to enroll in a single course or independent study on campus, do an off-campus internship, or study abroad.
